College Prowler Take

Those who have no interest in doing drugs will find it easy to build a drug-free social life at Wash U. Within certain social circles, pot is considered common currency, but unless all of your friends are potheads it won’t pose any social difficulties to the non-user. Some harder drugs are used on campus, but the harder they get, the fewer people use them. Mushrooms are pretty normal for regular pot users, while cocaine has a surprisingly large presence, especially among the fraternity social scene. Ecstasy, however, is virtually absent from campus. For those looking to avoid drugs at all costs, one big tip is to request a room on a substance-free floor or dorm, since most of the non-substance-free dorms will inevitably have a few pot smokers, and they may end up across the hall from you. For parties, it will be difficult to avoid drugs altogether, since petty drugs are a mainstay at frat parties, as well as off-campus events. When confronted with drugs, all you have to do is remember the sage advice of our former-first lady, Barbara Bush: “Just say no.”

Drugs aren’t too big on campus, except for weed. This isn’t nearly as tolerated, but it could be worse. The worst punishment I’ve heard of happening was someone got kicked out of the dorms for the following year after a second warning for smoking weed.

I don’t know too much about the drug scene on campus. I know it’s there, but no one pushes anything or tries to get you to do anything you don’t want to do. It’s not like they’re selling crack in the library!

I’m not going to say a drug scene doesn’t exist, but I would say it’s not a huge problem here—or certainly no worse than at other universities. It’s kind of your choice. If you want to avoid it, believe me, you can, but it’s kind of up to you and your choice. Either way, your decision won’t have a drastic effect on your social life.

Other than pot, drugs are really not a problem at Wash U. I’m sure harder drugs are used, but I never see it. That’s a plus, as far as I’m concerned.

Seek and you shall find. But, in general, if you want to avoid drugs, that’s also very easy. I personally never saw anyone doing drugs, but then I also tend to avoid that crowd.
