Good Luck Getting a Spot Here In front of Mallinckrodt

Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

While there isn’t much of an excuse to drive to campus every day (except for those few students who actually live far from the Hilltop), when it becomes necessary, parking offers few major difficulties. It’s best to avoid the main parking lot next to Mallinckrodt and the psychology building, though. Even if you find a spot there, without a parking permit you are guaranteed to receive a ticket in under 90 minutes. Parking permits cost way more than they should, but they remain reasonable compared to many campuses. Students can choose permits for the dorms, main campus, and restricted parking spots. Besides the official parking lots, there are a number of spots to be had with coin-operated meters, and it’s feasible to get by parking once in a while without a permit (especially when you calculate that it would take more than 30 expired-meter tickets to equal the price of a parking pass!). For example, the gorgeous, tree-lined street leading to Brookings Hall has several spots, as does Forsyth Boulevard, right beside main campus. Still, the least stressful way to get to campus is to walk or bike. The colder and the wetter it is, the more the cars come out, and the more difficult it becomes to find a spot.

Permits Are Expensive

Permits are expensive because they want less people driving to school because it's bad for the environment. Also, there are restrictions on where you can park your car and they ticket almost every day. They forgive the first parking ticket but if you get a second ticket, you have to pay for both.

Good Parking Options

Parking at Wash U is pretty easy to find, but if you park on the street, beware-WUPD (Wash U police) is quick to hand out tickets for parking in no-parking zones.

Facts

Getting a Parking Permit

Faculty and grad students both receive priority selection for parking permits. Parking permits come in several different varieties—Yellow (student parking), Red (priority parking), Blue (dorm lots only), and night/weekend. There are also evening passes for commuters, as well as monthly and daily passes for visitors or those who will have their car on campus for only a short time.

Did You Know? If you accumulate three or more parking tickets, you'd better watch out! Your car will get this nice bright orange sticker (very hard to peel off) that marks you as "on the verge"—that is, if you acquire another parking violation, your car will be towed and only returned after paying a mammoth fee.
