Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Sports? What sports? Okay, WSU does have sports on campus, but they are not prevalent. Visit the Wayne State University Athletic website, and you’ll see there are many, many more sports offered—more than the average student knows about—but the students usually only hear about the varsity football games, and that is it. Even though Wayne State is usually in first or second place in its division for swimming, hockey, and/or fencing, there is not much hype about these teams. As a research-based school that focuses more on academics. But, the University is trying to increase the awareness of the athletic department by renovating the Mort Harris Recreational and Fitness Center, offering fitness classes, and even installing an electronic billboard that flashes pictures of WSU's MVPs and the recent game scores. WSU does not currently have a marching band for the football season but is trying to build one up to also promote the sports WSU provides.

If you are into sports and want to show your support, just show your OneCard and you can get in free to all sporting events on campus. As for intramurals, they are played all over campus, and there are so many different sports. And if there is an intramural sport not currently offered, you can always start a team yourself.

Pretty Good

Because it is more of a commuter school there doesn't seem to be a huge involvement with the sports teams. But if you live on campus you are much more Involved. Our teams get better every year though especially football.

Wayne State Warriors.

Well our Football Warriors made it to nationals this year. We had a lot of students catch a bus down to Alabama. Our Basketball Warriors have a huge fan base. Every Thursday, everyone made sure to attend the game. We have great school spirit. We dedicated Wednesdays, "Warrior Wednesday."

School Spirit

Wayne State’s nickname is the warrior, but most students don't know what the actual mascot is supposed to be. A turtle? Dinosaur? Frog? No one really knows what it is other than a large green thing, but everyone supports it and loves to pose for pictures with it.

Athletics aren't really a huge focus here, but there is often a good student turnout at games because everyone supports and respects their fellow classmates and wants to see them succeed. Overall, there is good school spirit here. You will always see people wearing WSU gear, and the University tries to bring students together by offering things like late-night breakfasts during finals, free concerts, T-shirt giveaways, and a winter festival where everyone comes to witness the campus light up for the first time of the season, which usually draws a big crowd.
