Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Wayne State University is centrally located in Detroit, where there are people from all sorts of ethnic, economic, religious, and sexual backgrounds. Dearborn, a city a few minutes away, has the largest Arabic population in the United States, and WSU has a large Arabic population also. The school has about 35,000 students, so there are plenty of other ethnic backgrounds represented, as well. You will see or meet someone of nearly every imaginable ethnicity or nationality here.

Whatever your background, there is probably a related group or club you can join to help you meet other students with similar backgrounds. Examples include religious groups and the GLBT community. The school embraces this diversity and does things like provide rooms and mats for praying and allow the GLBT community to decorate campus for National Coming Out Day. Also, many international students come to this University because of its research opportunities here. They have the option of living in on-campus housing with their families, which can help ease homesickness since they can make traditional meals and conduct celebrations together. Also, international students can network and meet others who are doing research. Overall, the students here are very tolerant of other cultures and many try to understand and learn about them. It’s a great school for diversity.

A Mixture of Different Ethnicities

There are many different foreign ethnic groups on campus, yet over the years there has been a decline in the African-American race. I do like the fact that the University is now a research one institution bringing in a load of different students who have lots to offer, but there are less and less blacks attending the school. This is nothing to blame on the University, yet I believe because Wayne State University is competing now with the top schools in Michigan many African-Americans cannot take the pressures or just wish not too.

Very Diverse Campus

In Detroit, this city , most of its residents are of African American decent. At Wayne State, there are people from all walks of life. I've met people from China, New York, the UK, and even Nigeria on campus. I like meeting new people because it is interesting to see how they see things differently than I do.

There are students here who participate in alternative lifestyles, but nobody really cares because WSU allows everyone to freely express their opinions and views. The student organization Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Transgender and Allies (GLBTA) welcomes members at anytime and is active on campus.

Political Activity

Overall, WSU students seem to be liberal. There are some conservative students, but everyone respects one another. The liberal students seem to be more active on campus, but you don't see them daily.

The WSU student body is very economically diverse. Some lower-income students attend the school for free to help keep students in Detroit, other students are here on full academic scholarships, and some are paying their own way through college.

Most Common Religions

Students here don't seem to be very religious. There are religious organizations on campus, but they don't have a strong presence.
