Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Although Wayne State is an urban campus in Detroit, it is very safe. Petty theft and other crimes do still happen, but it’s no different than anywhere else. WSU has its own police force—not security guards, but actual police officers and even a K-9 Unit. The campus police officers attend the police academy but are employed by Wayne State. They serve the campus and the surrounding areas, and you will see Wayne State police patrolling on either bikes or vehicles every day. Each month, students, faculty, and staff receive the e-mail newsletter, CampusWatch, which informs everyone about the number of burglaries, larceny, assault incidents, and other matters, and a breakdown with specific information about the cases. If something major happens on campus, everyone gets an e-mail that day with the information. The campus police department also offers many other services, such as VIN etching, steering wheel club sales, and various classes including self-defense. There are also "blue lights" all over campus where any student, faculty, or staff member can phone the campus police. If you feel unsafe walking across campus, you can call public safety and an officer will take you to your destination.

If you plan on living on campus, there is no need to worry about safety in the dorms, either. Everyone needs a OneCard (the WSU student ID card) just to get into the dorm lobby. Then after having your ID checked in the lobby, you will need that same card to get onto the elevator or up the stairwell. Not to mention you need that card or a key to get into your dorm room. There are also cameras in the hallways, stairs, and laundry rooms. So there really isn’t a chance someone who’s not supposed to be there will get into the dorms. They are very secure.

Safety and Security

Being in downtown Detroit, campus crime tends to be high and though campus police do a very good job parolling and responding in a timely manner, many students still feel uneasy. Especially in the early morning hours or after dark.
