College Prowler Take
Sports are not big in general at Wellesley, but as any Division III athlete can attest, they’re big for students who participate. Balancing intense academics with demanding athletics isn’t an easy task, so it’s safe to say that Wellesley athletes are under-appreciated. Even when teams perform excellently, the college community at large rarely takes notice. Ruggers and ultimate Frisbee players, however, can count on a decent amount of attention, if only because they sometimes seem like social clubs, as well. No team is pulling in big spectators for home games and meets, but the crew team can count on a big campus contingent turning out for the Head of the Charles regatta in the fall. It would be nice to have a team that drew all the students together, but for a D-III school whose main focus will always be academics, that probably isn’t going to happen.

Varsity sports are very intense...
Varsity sports are very intense considering that Wellesley is a Division III. I rowed for novice crew last semester and found that the time commitment was too great and the 4 a.m. practices too early. Even other athletes, for example the softball team, have to get up at 6 a.m. for practice and then workout again in the afternoon. Considering the workload at Wellesley, this is an incredible commitment.

Varsity sports at Wellesley are up...
Varsity sports at Wellesley are up and coming. The athletes themselves are treated well but are only a small percentage of the campus population. The facilities are not amazing but are more than adequate for the number of people who use them. There is a lot faculty support for athletics, and I have never had a problem having to miss class for a game. The fan crowds at games are small but energetic. We have club sports, such as rugby, ultimate Frisbee, and water polo, which are popular on campus, as well as pick-up games scheduled through the sports center.

I don’t know much about sports on campus, except that they’re under-appreciated and under-funded. |

We have really dedicated teams at Wellesley, but we’re not a very sports-oriented school; don’t expect a massive cheering section if you play a varsity sport. Rugby and ultimate Frisbee are probably the two biggest sports on campus. |

Varsity sports aren’t big on...
Varsity sports aren’t big on campus. Also, they are not a priority for the school. I was on the cross-country team. Our uniforms were old and ugly and did not fit. We did not have any cross-training equipment specifically for the team to prevent us from being injured. No school officials ever made it to our races, even though we had a home meet and our league championships were on our home course. |

School Spirit
For every student that walks around campus with an “I’m Applying for Transfer” scowl pasted on her face, there are two or three that are wearing “And on the Eighth Day, She Created Wellesley” T-shirts. First year, the doubters and the fans are about equal in number; after four years, sentimental seniors can’t say enough about the bizarre institution that has become their home. Despite sticking us in the ‘burbs, sequestering us from men, working us until our brains are exploding, and making us pay ridiculous amounts of money for the privilege, students wind up grateful for the experience.
Getting Tickets
Getting tickets is certainly not a worry. The bigger problem, unless you know someone on the team, is finding out when the games are.
