Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

There are no traditional Greek social organizations on campus, but Wellesley has its own "societies" that students are welcome to join. Of course, Wellesley students view any kind of exclusive group with suspicion, especially one whose acceptance process requires going to "teas" and schmoozing. And while the stereotype of the Wellesley society girl doesn’t really hold up, the societies end up with a bad rap because there are always a few token members who totter around campus in their Manolos while clutching their Gucci bags.

The societies aren’t very popular on campus, but their parties are usually well attended. First-year students quickly figure out whether these parties are their scene or not, and upperclasswomen take advantage of the free booze. Though students may ridicule the societies as a whole, most members have many friends outside their society. What’s more, the dues that members pay go to funding lectures that the whole campus can attend. So, while mentions of the societies can induce eye-rolling, they’re well integrated into campus life.

Revision in Greek System

though Wellesley does not have a professional greek system, they do have societies that are somewhat comparable to the sisterhood, service, and social feel you'd expect from a sorority. As of late, Wellesley has now a total of 5 sororities, including the Agora Society (political), Shakespeare Society (self explanatory), Phi Sigma (lecture society), Zeta Alpha (writing/english), Tau Zeta Epsilon (music society). The Agora was added this past year in order to give some depth in the varieties of what Wellesley women can join. Though you can't live in a house with your sisters, each society does a phenomonal job creating sisterhood and promoting lectures on campus. I would highly recommend looking into one during the tea seasons. It only hightens the experience at Wellesley and of course, every org has its bad apples, but Wellesley and the societies are truly trying to change that

What They Lack in Greek Life, They Make up in Society Life

There is no Greek life at Wellesley. Instead, student join different types of visual and performing and literature societies. These groups hold performances and joint parties with nearby schools. They work hard and party even harder.
