Social Scene
Wellesley has several different social scenes. Some heterosexual students throw themselves into the MIT frat scene, while others keep a cynical distance and agonize over their lack of coed interaction. Most find their groove, however, whether it's lots of girls' nights out (or in), or alternative male contact through extracurricular activities, friends of friends, or chance meetings. Those who are, as one student put it, of "the girl-kissing persuasion," find a welcoming social community.
Hookups or Relationships?
Many students complain that while it is easy to find men to hook up with, it's not nearly so easy to make male friends or develop long-term relationships. And despite jokes about lesbians' tendency to commit to a lifetime on the first date, many members of the queer community say the same thing. Nevertheless, it seems like Wellesley women do pretty well for themselves, and a good number are in committed relationships.
Dress Code
Class-wear really varies. Some wear pajamas (almost out of a feeling of obligation-it is a women's college, after all), while others dress up in Gucci. Most, however, stick to jeans and sweaters. There are jokes that the Science Center is the realm of the Wolf Shirt Girl (an official Wellesley Type, replete with tapered, pleated jeans, Keds, long straggly hair, and an over-sized T-shirt), while econ majors please the profs with sweater sets and pearls. On big nights out, black sparkly outfits fill the F#%! Truck.
