Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

People who are into athletics at Wesleyan get "really" into it. The teams compete in the Division III NESCAC (New England Small College Athletic Conference) bracket (which can be learned about through its unofficial Twitter account, @inthecac), meaning it's slightly less of a commitment than at larger schools. The athletic facilities are great, and there is some school spirit—at least for the Homecoming game.

The downside to athletics, of course, is the large hipster population. This population is largely apathetic to sports and will only watch baseball games by accident because they happen to be sitting on Foss Hill and can't avoid watching. If you are an extremely serious athlete, this might not be the school for you. While sports are definitely there, they are more of a sidenote to Wesleyan's general laid-back, hippie-hipster attitude.

Athletics at Wes

As a recruited athlete, I'd say that our program is pretty good. It is division 3, meaning that it is a bit less of a commitment than larger universities, but the programs are still very rigorous and competitive. Wesleyan doesn't have a tremendous amount of fan support or school spirit, because there is so much going on besides athletics, and everyone is very busy. That being said, the football games are well attended, and everyone is supportive of the athletic teams. Our facilities and beautiful and state of the art. The fitness center is widely used across campus. There is a large sense of community on each athletic team, and student athletes are typically very dedicated and motivated.

GREAT!!!

I'm an athlete and everyone in the athletic department is very supportive and nice. The athletic trainers are there to help you and really do. The strength and conditioning coach really helps get you ready for the season. The teams compete in NESCAC, a very competitive league and All the teams bond very well. School spirit around athletics is very high, with the football and baseball game field at the center of campus to facilitate fans.

The Facilities Are Amazing

It is hard to beat the Freeman Athletic Center at Wesleyan. Everything about it is fantastic and the people there are great too. There is something for everyone at the athletic center, from playing basketball to squash, or just working out in general, Wesleyan's athletic center will fulfill your needs.

School Spirit

While traditional school spirit in the “ra-ra,” banner-waving sense is sparse at Wesleyan, the traditionally rebellious attitude of the student body exemplifies most enthusiasm for the school as an institution. However, most students at Wesleyan are deeply devoted to their University and see it as a completely unique school in a league of its own. While Wesleyan Cardinal T-shirts are rare, Wesleyan students are united by a sincere appreciation for the opportunities and experiences Wesleyan allows them.

Getting Tickets

Except for tournament games, Wesleyan sporting events are free to Wesleyan students. There is a box office located in Usdan University Center, but this is primarily for arts events.
