College Prowler Take

The drug scene at Wesleyan includes everything from excessive amounts of caffeine to heroin. Most common is illegal and excessive consumption of alcohol. While Wesleyan is not a ‘drinking school,’ students who have worked themselves to the brink of insanity during the week (a typical practice at Wesleyan) want to relax to the most extreme extent possible, and this often includes getting drunk. Parties at the frats are known for having large amounts of alcohol. Illegal substances are not uncommon there, either. Foss Hill, overlooking the center of campus, is home to a nightly collection of long-haired hippies who lay out underneath the stars and smoke pot. Slightly less visible is the hallucinogenic drug scene, which is favored by parts of the graphic art and film set. More covert is the hard-core drug scene, which includes cocaine and even heroin. The typical student who chooses not to partake in drugs could easily go all four years without ever coming across evidence of this underground network. However, it does exist, and it is extremely lively in certain circles. If you take drugs, the good news is that they are easy to get, and as far as marijuana and alcohol goes, Public Safety tends to look the other way if you’re careful and responsible about using.

Wesleyan students seem to feel about drugs the way they feel about most things: do it if that’s what you want, but nobody’s going to pressure you to do it if you don’t want to. While drugs are prevalent, there is very little social pressure either way. Groups of friends consist of drinkers and non-drinkers, smokers and non-smokers, potheads and non-potheads. Students are also very good at taking care of each other, and excessive partiers are seldom left to stew in their own messes. If you are strictly opposed to being in the presence of illicit substances, there are substance-free halls and a substance-free program house (Well-Being House).

Totally. College is a time for...

Totally. College is a time for self exploration and trying new things, and if that includes mind-altering drugs then it includes mind-altering drugs. It is completely possible to go through four years of Wesleyan without ever doing any sort of drug, and many students do. However, the likelihood of going through four years without ever seeing anyone doing, about to do, or under the influence of a drug is slim to none, unless you never leave your room or the computer lab. The again, if you are always in the computer lab, you are bound to see at least one person in there on some study drug at two in the morning.

Marijuana is huge and permeates many different social groups, but there is no pressure to smoke. People are pretty cool about it. As for harder stuff, you can find it if you look for it. If you don't look for it, you won't notice anything (I don't).

Well, it's Wesleyan. If you come here, you will be offered at least a joint. It's there, we all know it's there. However, it's by no means necessary for you to partake in that activity. There are harder drugs, but again, it's up to you whether to sample them or not. I'd be lying if I said that they don't exist on campus, but I personally don't smoke bud or do drugs, and I've never felt like it impacted any aspect of my life.

I have found that Wesleyan is...

I have found that Wesleyan is pretty big into marijuana. That's, of course, not true for everyone; there are social groups that smoke pot a lot and other groups that are not into it at all. It's generally inoffensive and low-key. People do it in private and would never pressure you into smoking. There are some people who use other drugs, too - mostly the occasional hallucinogen trip - but that is far more limited.

Most people have a ‘live and let live’ attitude at Wes. Not everyone does drugs, but most people aren’t really opposed to them either. It’s an individual choice, of course. The people who take drugs, they’re not out there pushing them on anyone else. They want the drugs for themselves, after all.
