College Prowler Take

Wesleyan’s University facilities and the smorgasbord of events and shows that take place therein are truly unique. While constantly expanding and adding newer and better structures to the campus’ already considerable collection of theaters, dining areas, and concert halls, Wesleyan keeps its present structures clean and extremely well maintained. The art, dance, and music studios in the Center for the Arts are numerous and spacious, as are the performance spaces. In addition, there are a number of smaller studios and performances spaces, such as the ‘92 Theater, just outside the CFA. These smaller areas are usually the venues of student sponsored shows (dance, theater, rock), while the larger spaces are reserved for faculty productions.

While Wesleyan has undergone a lot of construction in the past few years, most recently gaining the new Usdan University Center and the ballroom and rehearsal studios in the converted squash courts of Beckham Hall, the massive construction of a few years ago has tapered off as Wesleyan begins to feel the results of the recession. A major rehaul of the science buildings has been postponed indefinitely. One project that is still going on, however, is the renovation of the old Davenport Campus Center into the Albritten Center for Public Life, which will house the newly expanded writing program. The facilities at Wesleyan are, doubtless, top-of-the-line. They’ll just remain where they are for the next few years, while the University gathers the funds to keep on building.

Facilities at Wesleyan aren’t bad. The Center for the Arts is the best group of facilities on campus. That’s where the cinema and theaters are located. The CFA is really state-of-the-art. Wesleyan is an art-oriented school, so it makes sense that these are the best-kept facilities. Olin Library houses a collection of over one million titles, including a special collections archive with texts dating back to the 15th century. Olin also houses Wesleyan’s music library, periodicals room, and various study halls and quiet rooms. Thesis study carrels are available for seniors. Public computers are available, as well as data jacks for laptop Internet access. Science Library is located on the ground floor of the Science Tower. SciLi contains titles mostly pertaining to math and science. Computer and Internet access are also available.

The facilities at Wesleyan are fantastic. The school is constantly building and renovating its facilities, which means every year, there’s something new to look forward to. The cinema for the film department is huge and wonderful. There are a couple of great spaces for theater, like the ’92 Theater. Crowell Music Hall is an excellent performance space for music and whatever else those crazy performance majors can think of.

There are two big libraries, Olin and the SciLi, and both are clean and well maintained. There are lots of computers to use, and of course, the selection of books is enormous.

Freeman Athletic Center is pretty great. The weight room is three times bigger than the old one. Fauver field was plowed over to make way for a dormitory, which just meant one less place to play sports on campus. Otherwise, the sports facilities aren’t bad.

What To Do on Campus

Wesleyan is home to many unusual pastimes. The Boogie Club meets regularly to dance in public for the enjoyment of others, and the Melodrama is a yearly student-written musical parody of Wesleyan themes in a faux-Western style - the audience is encouraged to throw marshmallows at the actors. Relaxing on Foss Hill is always popular, as is playing Frisbee on Andrus field, and full-contact croquet is a popular draw in warmer weather. In the winter, Foss Hill is great for sledding (some even use trays from the dining hall for sleds). Many of the dorms have roof access, and watching the sunset from the roof of your dorm is a great way to cap off a long day of class. Wesleyan is also home to a bizarre catacomb of underground tunnels, and no freshman year would be complete without exploring these hidden coves.

Favorite Things To Do

On any given Friday night there’s plenty to do on campus, no matter what your definition of a good time may be. The Film Series shows movies on the weekends, and these tend to draw large crowds. The fraternities on campus usually throw parties, as do many of the program houses. Eclectic, one of Wesleyan’s most popular theme houses, usually holds live concerts, as does Alpha Delt (Alpha Delta Phi) fraternity. The lecture series is great if you’re in the mood for some fascinating academic conversation, as are the official University concerts, which include everything from Irish folk music to Javanese Gamelan. Almost every weekend, there is a theater production going up, either sponsored by the theater department in the Center For the Arts theater or by Second Stage (Wesleyan’s student-run production company) in the ’92 theater, and these performances range from merely amusing to totally awesome. Visiting students are often surprised by how much time Wesleyan students actually spend in their rooms, drinking tea and discussing world events. Big social events are usually a blast, but more intimate gatherings are frequent. It is in these situations that you really get to know people and learn about some of the amazingly creative and unique individuals who attend Wesleyan.

Did You Know?

Most of the buildings on campus are connected by a system of tunnels. Many of these are frequently used by students, such as the CFA tunnels and the ones under the Butterfield dorms, but some—like the ones on College Row—are secret.
