College Prowler Take
Nightlife in Middletown, in terms of clubs and bars, is practically non-existent. There are one or two bars, but these are overrun by Middletown elders who just want a cold beer after work and usually don’t feel like being hassled by crazed Wesleyan students. Most students agree that if you want to have fun at night around Wesleyan, house and dorm parties are the way to go. Because of the school’s poor location, Wesleyan students more or less make their own fun. These are often non-traditional events. A good example would be the naked parties, held every semester or so. Naked parties are just like any other party except that everyone is, well, naked. As popular as larger parties are, a fair number of Wesleyan students prefer late-night social events centered around smaller groups of people. Runs for coffee, late-night movies, and conversation at 3 a.m. make up much of the spectrum of Wesleyan nightlife. This is the only place I know where kids get together, sip tea, and talk about philosophy until sunrise. The College Prowler grade for nightlife reflects more traditional avenues of nightlife: beer-pong, drunken twister, and proximity to clubs and bars. In this case, Wesleyan receives a below-average mark.

A lot of parties center around drinking, but unlike other schools, there are also a lot of dance parties (my favorite). |

Frats are the place for parties. I mean actual college parties: lots of people, sweatiness, groping, and beer. A lot of the program houses throw parties as well. If you want to get drunk, it’s usually not a problem. Just look for a house with the doors open and listen for the loud music. There’s usually a keg in there somewhere. |

If you want to throw a party for over 50 people, you have to fill out a special form. Usually parties only run a little passed 2 a.m. After that, Public Safety starts marching up and down High Street shutting places down like the Gestapo. Mostly, it’s for noise violations. No one gets in trouble, really. Wesleyan kids like to cut loose, so there’s usually a lot of drinking and drugs. |

There aren’t any clubs in Middletown. Occasionally they get some strobe lights and play some music at MoCon and call it ‘Club M-Con’ (corny). The student parties are great. People throw them in their dorm rooms. Students just turn up their speakers and blast some music—it’s awesome! |

There is no nightlife in Middletown. Zip. I’ve heard of Wesleyan kids hanging out in a few of the Middletown bars, but I’ve never been to them. If you want a good party, the program houses throw them occasionally. The frats are a good place to get trashed, if that’s what you’re into. |
Facts
Organization Parties
Wesleyan Organizations love to throw parties, and they range from “best night ever” to “I wish I’d stayed home and watched a movie.” Occasionally a few groups will join together to throw a larger bash, and these events are much more likely to blow your mind. Flyers for these events crop up all over campus some time in the proceeding weeks, and the take place in houses, rented campus facilities, or frats.
Bar Listings
A student favorite, because not only is this the only real bar in Middletown, but it offers dancing, lounging, and booze. Bar 386 386 Main St. (860) 346-6400
Eli’s offers the best selection of microbrews, drafts, and bottled beers around. Students often comment on the great variety of liquors for shots, as well! The atmosphere is warm and cozy, and the food is so good students come for dinner and stay for the drinks.
Gatekeeprs is pretty much a hole in the wall but has excellent service and a cult following. The Gatekeepers Tavern 73 Ferry St. (860) 347-2883
Kev’s is normally packed with students and young professionals. Occasional music and pretty cheap drinks are also a plus. Many local bands, as well as nationally-known bands, play there. Kev’s Pub – A Neighborhood Gathering 288 South Main St. (860) 346-7441

What to Do if You're Not 21
Middletown has a handful of decent coffee shops which are great places to hang out, drink coffee, and talk to locals. Middletown is beginning to develop a reputation as a sort of low-priced hippy town, so talking to people who are around but not part of Wesleyan is always interesting. Places like Thai Gardens are open late and good for late-night snacks and conversation.
Most seniors have houses around campus, and on weekends there are often multiple parties going on simultaneously. These parties are occasionally broken up by Public Safety, so be sensible. Some senior houses are on streets completely owned by Wesleyan (designated “Party Streets”) and some are on streets that also house townies (“Quiet Streets”). Neighbors on quiet streets are much more likely to call in noise complaints.
There are also countless concerts each semester, where the numerous student bands showcase their talkents, student groups also bring in indie bands from all over the North East. Eclectic, the WestCo Café, and Beckham Hall are the most likely places to find a concert.
