Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

There is ample parking at Wesleyan. As a freshman, you get the short end of the stick—but it's not that bad. Vine Street is the main parking lot freshmen are allowed to park in, and it is a short walk away from most freshman dorms. If you live in the Butts, a program house, an apartment, or a senior house, you will most likely have your own parking lot or open street/driveway parking.

You have to buy a parking pass, which costs $50 per semester, but it's really best to buy it—Wesleyan cracks down on illegal parking, and you can get stuck with some pretty hefty fines. As to whether you should bring your car to Wesleyan or not, it is useful to know someone with a car, but if it is yours, then lots of people will ask you for rides. Thus, it's definitely better just to make friends with people who have cars and then mooch off of them.

Sufficient

For upperclassmen there's a huge lot, and seniors tend to park their cars at their houses. I haven't heard any complaints.

Excellent Parking

Freshmen are allowed to bring cars and there is pretty much infinite parking space. I have never had a problem finding a spot and its the best case scenario.

Convenient at Times, Unnecessary at Times

So far at Wesleyan, I have seen people greatly benefit from having a car on campus (i.e. when it is raining), and I have seen people glad that they did not bring their cars to campus. Freshmen are allowed to have a car on campus, but I know very few who brought them for the first semester at Wesleyan. I do not have a car on campus, and I feel as though I have no need for one. The campus is easy to get around, and almost every location is within a short walking distance.

Facts

Getting a Parking Permit

Wesleyan is very car-friendly, which is a good thing, as Middletown isn’t exactly in the thick of things. Student permits are available from Public Safety for $50 a semester. Really, it’s much cheaper to get the parking permit than to pay Public Safety’s incessant tickets on unregistered vehicles. Freshmen are forced to park a little out of the way, but after freshman year, parking gets easier. The Butts, High Rise, and Low Rise apartments have their own parking lots, and there’s plenty of street and driveway parking outside program or wood-frame houses.
