Approximate Parking Permit CostParking Permits
Wesleyan is very car-friendly, which is a good thing, as Middletown isn’t exactly in the thick of things. Student permits are available from Public Safety for $50 a semester. Really, it’s much cheaper to get the parking permit than to pay Public Safety’s incessant tickets on unregistered vehicles. Freshmen are forced to park a little out of the way, but after freshman year, parking gets easier. The Butts, Hi-Rise, and Lo-Rise have their own parking lots, and there’s plenty of street and driveway parking outside program or wood-frame houses.
College Prowler Take
Parking is not really a problem at Wesleyan. The majority of students do not own cars. Those who do have plenty of spaces to park them. Freshmen are relegated to the Vine Street lot, behind and across the street from Foss Hill, which is convenient for those in the Foss Hill dorms, but not really for others. The Butterfield dorms have their own parking lot, as do the Washington Street houses and Hi-Rise and Lo-Rise. Most wood-frames and program houses have driveways and street parking available, but watch out in the winter—winter parking bans are deadly. It is no exaggeration to say that Wesleyan cracks down harder on parking violators than it does on drugs and alcohol. The Butterfield Residence Halls, which are two streets over from Foss Hill, have their own parking lot. Many of the administrative buildings, such as the Admissions Department and North College, also have their own parking lot, but leave your car there overnight and you’ll wake up with an enormous fine on your hands. There is an old Wesleyan adage when it comes to parking and cars, and it goes something like this: “‘Tis good to have a car, ‘tis better to have a friend who has a car.”

Anyone here can have a car. There is a big lot in the back of campus for long-term parking, and there are parking lots peppered around campus, but a car is really best for getting off campus, not driving around on campus. You definitely don't need a car. I've managed perfectly fine all four years without one. Just make friends with someone who does if you want maximum ease in getting off campus.

Parking on campus is fine. There...
Parking on campus is fine. There is a huge student lot on the edge of campus where most people who live in dorms leave their cars. You have to pay $50 to register your car, but anyone can have one. Campus is really small, so you don't have to drive to class, and if you park in lots near the academic buildings you will get ticketed. You really only need a car to get to places off campus.

I’ve had a car on campus for the past two years, and even though I’ve lived all over, I’ve always had a place to park it. You don’t need to drive to class, since everything is so close by, but it’s nice to have a car for driving around town or going up to Hartford to see a show. But there’s always a place to park on campus, no question. |

Public Safety officers are terrible about parking. They’ll ticket you so fast, it’ll make your head spin. You see those little boots everywhere. There is parking, so use it. Don’t park illegally! They’ll get you! |
