Transportation at Wesleyan University

Sub-Par but Still Good.

M-Link is cheap and great but not always reliable, but definitely the go-to transportation for getting off-campus cheaply without using your car or a friends. On campus the ride stops at specific locations roughly every 15 minutes and is free for all students in any state (and you don't get judged for using it). It's pretty awesome.

Middletown Is Cute

Despite several of the people who believe Middletown is a horrible place, it's really pretty nice. If you come from a city, sure it may seem less lively but that is because its a town. Main street is a great place to go during the day and at night too! Several students go to bars and clubs in town and have a great time.

Psafe

So far I've felt pretty safe on campus. Even walking from Usdan to the Butts at night. PSafe is good about showing up shortly after you call them.

There is some theft but nothing too worrisome.

Magic of Wes

For those who attend Wes or have visited, most are able to recognize that it really is a special place. Since Wesleyan I have been exposed to the greatest diversity of unique individuals that share a common goal of enjoying their college experience, in whatever ways best suit them. FOSS hill during spring time epitomizes Wesleyan - a grassy hill looking out over the central quad and baseball/football fields where people from all grades and social groups congregate.

Drug Safety

In terms of alcohol and weed, public safety more or less turns a blind eye, as long as whatever going on is safe and not too noisy. These two substances are used quite frequently by a majority of students on campus (85% of students at Wesleyan drink). However, the great thing about Wesleyan is that you are accepted regardless of your choices, and so if one of your choices is to not drink, there will be very little pressure from the vast majority of students, and your opportunities for a social night life are far from eliminated.

The campus is not strict. If you get caught, typically they put your name down, but nothing comes of it.

Amazing!

Wesleyan is the most accepting and open place I've ever been to. The people are fantastic, the classes are great, and you can always find a party that suits you. Living in a triple in Clark is not actually that bad, plus because the campus is small you can pretty much get to anywhere in 5min. I am so glad that I chose Wesleyan and even though it's only been two and a half weeks here, it has been the best two and a half weeks ever!

Diversity University!

There is such a colorful blend of different socioeconomic, cultural, and religious backgrounds here on campus. There are a great number of international students and everyone here is so unique. Wesleyan is a great place to express your individuality, but at the same time there is a strong sense of community. If diversity is an important factor for you, then Wes might just be the right place for you!

Great

I've never met as many friendly and incredibly unique people as I have at Wesleyan. I wouldn't change my decision to go here.. the tight-knit but also not too small number of students who go here is perfect and they're some of the friendliest people you'll ever meet – each with his or her own story.

Good Variety

Campus housing is great. Living in Clark as a freshman is awesome (not forced into the Fauver triples) and we've formed a really great tight-knit community. There is GREAT water pressure in the showers too... which I don't know about for most people, but my roommate and I dig it. Clark is also located right next to Olin Library and just across from the student center, so it's incredibly easy to get around to anywhere you need to go. There is also an awesome variety of housing, and even the triples are pretty spacious. I've been to a lot of the different houses, and there's so many cool ones.

What's Goin on? Everything.

The nightlife at Wesleyan is really great, and there's something for everyone. The nightlife doesn't revolve around the frats, but I'll start there. Wesleyan has fraternities, which host many parties throughout the weekend (Psi U always holds down for Thursday nights). Eclectic, another frat, has concerts almost every weekend, if not more frequently, and they tend to be great indie bands for little to no cost. There's also quite the nightlife outside of the frats, which is really wonderful. There are dorm parties and organized dances and much more. Along the senior housing streets, there are house parties. What's wonderful is that all of the nightlife happens on campus, so you don't have to spend barely any money to have a good time, almost all events are well attended, and it's all quite easy to get to. If you're not into partying, or just not at the moment, there are tons of other things to do as well. There are always concerts and performances going on at Second Stage or the Center for the Arts, and these are quite inexpensive, and usually quite good. Wesleyan also has a full-sized movie screen which projects movies every Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, and Saturday nights. And beyond that, there's even more to do, and it's almost all inclusive and welcoming to everyone.

More Than a Pleasant Surprise

Coming to a liberal arts college in New England, I was not expecting for there to be very much diversity. But once I started going here, I realized how wrong I had been. There are many students of many races, including many international students. There is also a healthy range of economic diversity, which is very important for me as a student on financial aid. It seems that many people hang out across racial/ethnic groups and are not limited to friendships based on these constructs. Also, though Wesleyan is known as a pretty left-leaning college, there is a presence of non-liberal students, which leads to important discourse. The sexual orientation of students is a topic that is talked about often to help foster a positive environment for all people, and I believe this is successful. All in all, I find Wesleyan to be quite a diverse school.

AMAZING PLACE

I don't know how Wesleyan does it, but this school is legitimately my favorite place in the world. The school attracts a certain type of person: fun, genuinely nice, unique, and this adds to the overall atmosphere. The school always has awesome activities going on, there is always a party when you want one, people are always sitting on foss hill just enjoying the scenery, and the work is worth the effort. I would 100% recommend coming to Wesleyan.

Drug Scene

There is definitely a visible drug scene at Wesleyan. If you are looking for a drug, you can most likely find it on campus pretty easily. Most of the student body smokes weed and drinks (and some people do harder drugs), but if you don't you are not looked at any differently and you can still have an amazing time on campus.

Amazing

Surprisingly many people have a negative impression of Wesleyan's social life. I came to Wes thinking it would have a bad nightlife. It is in fact amazing. You can always find something to do. Weather you want to go to a party, a frat, concert, movie, performance, or just lay back and enjoy the night at Foss Hill, it is all there. Every night is a good night. People know they are here to do good things so I especially like how everyone is about balance.

It Is Possible to Get to Wesleyan

Transportation to and from Wesleyan isn't as convenience at more centrally located at schools, but it is definitely possible to get there. Trains (Metronorth, Amtrak) are probably the most convenient form of transportation from the North East, and the buses have spotty schedules. But if you plan ahead, it is very possible to have a convenient trip. It does get a bit costly if you leave campus often (which most people do not do).

Middletown Is Quaint

The town has a great selection of international cuisine (very satisfying Thai and Vietnamese especially) and there are often discounts for students. It is very convenient to walk into town, and often nice to explore. The relationship between the townspeople and Wesleyan students has greatly improved in recent years. Overall, I am satisfied with what the town has to offer

Usdan, Summerfields, and Wesshop, Oh My!

Wesleyan has DELICIOUS FOOD. Besides that, your choices are diverse and abundant. Places like Weswings, Wesshop, PI cafe, Red & Black Cafe can really eat up your points if you're too lazy to walk to either Usdan or Summerfields (big cafeteria like settings) to use up one of your meals. Also, the freshman fifteen WILL sneak up on you... I forgot the food carts that are on campus late at night. There's Mamoun's Falafel, a grilled cheese station, and many others for your late night cravings. yummy

Psafe

PSafe (Public Safety) at Wesleyan is pretty chill and does a good job of keeping campus safe. I haven't heard many complaints. As long as you're not blatantly drinking vodka in their faces, they'll leave you alone if you seem to not be in any danger. They will also give you rides to any doctors appointments/pharmacies which is nice.
