College Prowler Take

Campus security is a tense issue at Wesleyan. While the campus itself appears cleaner and more idyllic than many New England schools, there is a disturbingly high rate of crime in and around Wesleyan University. Very few of these crimes seem to be perpetrated by Wesleyan students, other than the occasional episode of “artistic vandalism” or civil disobedience. The simple fact is that Middletown is not a very safe place to live. Don’t get me wrong—the majority of Middletown residents are good, friendly people. However, there is a criminal element that will occasionally find its way onto or around campus.

There are occasional thefts of student property by non-students, especially in housing closer to town (Lo-Rise and the senior houses on Pearl Ave), but people are getting smarter about locking their doors and windows and not leaving their things where they can be snatched. Public Safety and the Middletown Police are not always successful at apprehending thieves, but whenever it seems like crime in Middletown is rising, Public Safety doubles the number of officers roaming campus. And when my bag got stolen last year, a Public Safety officer found the bag itself within a few days and returned it to me.

I have never felt unsafe on campus. A female friend of mine had to walk back from downtown every night after volunteering, and she said she always felt safe. We have blue-light phones around campus. Wesleyan's Public Safety is a great presence to have around. They don't bother you if you're not being a nuisance, but they're really helpful if you're in any sort of trouble. With that being said, Middletown has a fair amount of crime, like any other city, and occasionally students are affected by this.

Personally, I feel very safe on campus. I've never had any bad experiences. That being said, there are always a couple of safety alerts that go out from Public Safety each semester about some student being robbed, but it's very rare. You always have the option of taking the Ride to wherever you need to go, and Public Safety is always around.

for the most part, Wesleyan is a safe place. If anything ever happens on or around campus, it is generally due to outsiders coming on campus, but that is fairly rare and generally not too serious. If you do feel like you'd like some company on your way home, not only are the students really nice but the Ride is a van service that does tours of campus in the dark to take students where they need to go.

I feel pretty safe at Wesleyan. There’s a safety shuttle that you can take across campus after sunset, but I never take it. Screw that! I think it’d be too embarrassing. Besides, if you walk in groups, there’s no reason to feel unsafe. Even by yourself, you’re usually fine. My sophomore year, I treked across campus every night at around nine to get to my friends house. I never felt too freaked out.

The Public Safety guys are kind of chill. They get dumped on because occasionally they have to bust up parties, but most of them are really good people. No one here wants to get you in trouble if they don’t have to.
