Best Ways to Get Around Town

  • On Friday and Sunday afternoons, Wesleyan runs a shuttle to New Haven for about $15
  • Middletown Area Transportation (MAT)
  • Walk

How to Get to the Airport

  • Bradley International Airport is about 40 minutes away. A Cab to the airport costs about $60, but split between a few other people it’s not that bad. The best way to get to the airport (and Boston or New York), though, is to use something called the Rideboard (quicklink.wesleyan.edu/rideboard), where Wes students post where they’re going and how many seats they have, and if you chip in gas money and offer to bring cookies, you can ride with them.

College Prowler Take

Heading out to Bradley Airport can be a pain if you don’t have a car on campus (and if you’re taking a plane home, you probably don’t). Wesleyan does, however, offer a great carpool system. There is an online ride-board where people post where they’re going and how many seats they have, and students who need rides post where they’d like to go. Since there is no bus to Bradley, and the shuttle service only leaves during breaks, your next best bet is to take a cab. There are a variety of cab companies in Middletown and the surrounding areas, most of which will get you to the airport for between $60 and $70. If you have a few friends who are leaving around the same time, it’s a good idea to split the cost and go together.

As for getting around Middletown, Main Street, which is within walking distance, has mostly anything a student needs. For longer trips, it’s best to make friends with somebody who owns a car. The campus itself is relatively small, so students walk from place to place. A safety shuttle is available at night though, when walking alone wouldn’t be such a good idea.

Campus is small enough that walking or biking is fine to get around. There is a shuttle that runs at night, which is good if it's raining or if you're too tired to walk home from a party. Wesleyan runs a shuttle to New Haven on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. They've improved the service on this every year since I've been here. New Haven is cool, but the real reason for going there is to take the commuter rail from there into NYC for the weekend.

Public transportation isn't very good in Middletown, but you don't need it. Everything is basically on campus, and there is a campus shuttle that you can call to take you to places around campus that runs from 7 p.m. to 4 a.m. It's a little annoying to get to the train or bus station to go home over breaks, but there is a shuttle, and people often split cabs, so it's not too big of a deal.

Wesleyan runs vans on campus at night, which is nice if it's cold or you're feeling lazy, but other than that people don't much use public transportation. Middletown has a bus service, but it's not necessary to use it - downtown is close by, and you can generally find someone willing to give you a ride to places that are further away.

There are cabs, buses, and the usual stuff. There’s also area transit buses for getting around Middletown, though the place is small enough where you can walk to just about any place you need to go.

Public transportation isn’t really necessary here. There are Middletown Area Transit buses, but I don’t know why Wesleyan students would use them. I had friends with cars all four years, so it was never really an issue for me. If you’ve got a car you can bring to school, then do it. You’ll wind up being everybody’s best friend.
