Transportation

Quick Stats

Best Ways to Get Around Town
  • On Friday and Sunday afternoons, Wesleyan runs a shuttle to New Haven for about $15.
  • Middletown Area Transportation (MAT)
  • Walk
Best Ways to Get to the Airport
  • Bradley International Airport is about 40 minutes away. A cab to the airport costs about $60, but split between a few other people, it’s not that bad.
  • The best way to get to the airport (and Boston or New York) is to use something called the Rideboard (quicklink.wesleyan.edu/rideboard), where Wes students post where they’re going and how many seats they have, and if you chip in gas money and offer to bring cookies, you can ride with them.

Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Transportation to, from, and around Wesleyan isn't fantastic, but it could be worse. The nearest airport is about 30 to 40 minutes away, so most students split a taxi ($60), take the Wesleyan shuttle when available ($15), or have a friend drive them (free to $20, depending on how nice your friend is). Note: If you have a car, you will be asked to drive people to the airport and the two train stations multiple times throughout the year, so it's better to make friends with someone who has a car rather than having one yourself. There are also public buses that run to grocery stores and other such nearby places, but they are not as frequently used.

On campus, Wesleyan has a great system called "The Ride" that cruises around picking up students and dropping them off where they need to go. While you can't summon it to come get you, it's free, and they don't judge you on your state of inebriation or laziness. Other than that, the campus is very walkable, and Main Street (restaurants, Rite Aid, and a theater) is easily within walking distance.

Sub-Par but Still Good.

M-Link is cheap and great but not always reliable, but definitely the go-to transportation for getting off-campus cheaply without using your car or a friends. On campus the ride stops at specific locations roughly every 15 minutes and is free for all students in any state (and you don't get judged for using it). It's pretty awesome.

Transportation

I have not used any campus transportation, but I have seen the campus shuttle dropping people off in front of my dorm after a night out. I'm pretty sure there is also a shuttle to downtown (or shops like walmart, etc.) and to neighboring cities to perhaps get onto a train to new york, boston, or elsewhere. I have realized, however, that transportation has not been an issue at all for me yet. The furthest walk (to downtown or the bookstore) is probably only 15-20 minutes from my dorm, which is probably the furthest away from these locations on campus.

It Is Possible to Get to Wesleyan

Transportation to and from Wesleyan isn't as convenience at more centrally located at schools, but it is definitely possible to get there. Trains (Metronorth, Amtrak) are probably the most convenient form of transportation from the North East, and the buses have spotty schedules. But if you plan ahead, it is very possible to have a convenient trip. It does get a bit costly if you leave campus often (which most people do not do).
