College Prowler Take

Wesleyan, in finer weather, is absolutely gorgeous. The early summer and late autumn usually bring considerable heat, but the occasional cool breeze keeps everybody nice and comfortable. Winters are long and practically unbearable, and students used to warmer climates usually gape in horror at the growing mountains of snow outside their windows. The snow falls and will remain on the ground for several months, freezing over into hard crusts not unlike the Arctic (without the cuddly little baby seals). While brutal for early morning walks to class, winter provides some great sledding conditions on Foss Hill.

The snowy months are buffered by two long rainy seasons. It seemed to rain constantly my first year at Wesleyan. The topography of Wesleyan is such that flooding occurs regularly. While the dorms and other facilities stay dry, Andrus Field and the walkways connecting various campus facilities are often submerged. Bring thick boots and a big umbrella unless you want to be labeled as “that water-logged student who always shows up late to class.”

I'm from the Midwest, and the winter here is definitely longer. So bring a coat, snow boots, and an umbrella for fall and spring rains. A sled (or a lunch tray from the cafeteria) is also essential. The fall colors here are fantastic, and sunny spring days spent on Foss Hill are wonderful. Bring swim trunks for early fall or late spring journeys to Miller's Pond.

The majority of the school year is cold, cold, cold. There is about a month at the beginning of the fall, and about a month right before graduation, where it is sunny and warm. But for the majority of the year, I wear jeans, coat, scarf, gloves, and a hat! Bring rainboots and winter boots!

Bring clothes for all types of weather. Connecticut's weather is wildly varied. It can be 70 and sunny one day, snowing the next. It gets really, really cold in the winter, but fall and the spring are gorgeous and warm, if sometimes rainy. Rain boots and boots you can wear in the snow are both good investments.

The weather here isn’t bad. I’m from Vermont, so Connecticut seems pretty temperate to me. My freshman year it rained constantly, but that was sort of a fluke. When it snows, it snows a lot. They never cancel class, so occasionally you’ll have to trek through the Arctic tundra only to discover your professor hasn’t shown up for class.

Winters are very, very long here, but the spring and autumn are worth it. Wesleyan is gorgeous when the weather is nice. When the leaves turn on the trees, it’s really delightful.
