Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Sports garner a lot of attention and love from not only the students at WVU but the surrounding community members as well. There are no professional sports teams in the state of West Virginia, so the Mountaineers are the next best thing. Fan support for the University’s athletic teams is extremely high, and the students take as much pride in the teams as the players do. The most popular sports are football and basketball. Football games are almost always sold out on Saturdays, and the Coliseum is always packed for Mountaineer basketball games.

With a new ticketing system, tickets are not as easy to get as they used to be. It is all done online, and students have to request a ticket and then hope to receive an e-mail after a waiting period to find out if they obtained a ticket or not. Student tickets to all athletic events are free because a minimal price is paid in the Student Activities Fee. On football game days, Morgantown becomes the most populated city in the state because of the fan base that travels to Milan Puskar Stadium for the game. Traffic is not as terrible as some would think, however, because the state troopers direct traffic and turn off traffic lights. The best rivalry we have is against the Pittsburgh Panthers. Intramural sports are popular at WVU, but not overly anticipated. There are several sports offered in male, female, and coed leagues during all seasons of the year. The most popular intramurals are basketball and flag football.

Great

Football games are always a good time, it seems like the whole state turns out for a home game. Basketball games are also fun, and the best part is its all free.

Most Popular Sports

Football and basketball are the most popular sports at WVU. The student sections are always packed and rowdy for each home game.

Most Overlooked Teams

Women’s and men’s soccer and men’s wrestling are both overlooked. Each year, they all perform well enough to get into their respective league tournaments. They have also received invitations to national tournaments, as well as had individual players win national honors.

School Spirit

School spirit at WVU is one of the main things that makes this school what it is. Students here love their school and their sports teams, and they are not afraid to show their appreciation for them. The student sections for football and basketball games are always completely full, and around campus, students can always be seen donning their WVU apparel.

Getting Tickets

Student tickets to sporting events are included in the student activities fee. Students get their tickets through www.wvugame.com. Non-students can get tickets from there also.

Best Place to Take a Walk

The Rail Trail is a popular place for people to walk and jog. It runs by the river and is often crowded with people. Students can also be seen just walking through campus because it is very well lit and safe.
