College Prowler Take

The police presence on campus is very strong, but not completely overwhelming to students. If anything, it gives the students a sense of security knowing that there is usually an officer somewhere in the vicinity. Campus police aren’t considered extremely strict, but do they take their stand on some issues. Underage drinking on campus is not something that students want to get caught going—it will result in a citation and possible notification of parents. Other things taken seriously on campus are parking violations. Parking is extremely limited, so those parking without proper permits are given tickets until their vehicle is moved. Dorm violations can also result in probation from student events, removal from the dorm, or even expulsion.

The local police presence is just as strong as the campus police, as they pretty much share duties. While both police forces are very friendly, local police are a little more strict than campus police. It is usually the local police that watch over parties, and they make sure things do not get out of hand. Students usually won’t get in trouble for something off campus unless they go looking for it. Neither police force goes out of their way to bust students or cause trouble, but they will go through with their duty and take care of any problems they see fit. What students should definitely avoid doing is drinking or drugs in the dorm. Being caught for either can result in removal from the dorms, or even expulsion, as well as counseling programs and parent notification. Other than that, students are mostly able to come and go as they please, as long as they don’t go out of their way to make trouble.

I don't know how strict they are...

I don't know how strict they are about keeping drugs and alcohol in the dorms. If you show up to the Mountain Lair's Up All Night intoxicated, the cops there won't give you a hard time. They're just glad you're in a safe place where they can watch you. Cops won't arrive at a kegger unless there's a noise complaint.

If you don't act like an idiot,...

If you don't act like an idiot, you'll be fine. You'll get in trouble for drugs and for drinking and driving. If you're in a bar and you see police or ABC, put your drink down and be inconspicuous, and you'll usually be fine. It's hard to get a public intoxication unless you're throwing up or making a huge scene.

Students are prohibited from...

Students are prohibited from bringing alcohol or drugs on campus, and both alcohol and drugs are prohibited in student housing. On game nights, almost everyone throws parties, so police tend to be tolerant of alcohol as long as there is no dangerous or obnoxious behavior.
