Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

The computers and computer network at WVU are not lacking. The computers are nothing less than the best technology, and the network is fast and easy to use. There are computer labs located in several different spots on campus—including the library, several classroom buildings, as well as in some of the dorms. Even with all this, it is recommended that students bring their own computers to ensure themselves access anytime they need one. Even with all the computers available, there is no guarantee that a student will find one available every time they may need one. Having one’s own computer will also benefit the student who prefers to work later at night, rather than having to squeeze into a 24-hour lab. Not finding a computer is a rare occurrence, but it is still nice for students to have their own.

WVU has implemented a wireless network in different spots on campus. It has been hooked up in the Mountainlair, as well some class buildings and libraries. The University sets firewalls and Internet regulations for students living in the dorms, and a student may lose Internet access if their bandwidth usage is exceedingly high or if their machine is detected as having a virus (in order to prevent other users from becoming infected). Students can have their Internet access reinstated by bringing their computers to tech support and having the virus removed. Students are permitted to use file sharing programs, but the University does not condone it and sends warnings of consequences for downloading illegal material.

there aren't many computers here to just jump on at any time, but there is wifi almost everywhere on campus. I would definitely recommend bringing everything you got from laptop to desk computer because a lot of homework and research will happen there. The wifi isn't that great, but it gets you by. Also, BRING A PRINTER.

Computer Access

The computers are great, there are macs and PC's so you can choose which ever you like. The printing is cheap but it also helps to have your own just in case the printers are not working or it the library is packed. The wireless is great! It is easy to connect to the internet, the connection is also fairly fast.

Good Computers/ Well Maintained

There are multiple library's all over the different campus'. All of these computers offer free computers which the students can use as they wish. There are also dedicated computer labs located in several key buildings which are constantly maintained so that they are working smoothly. Printing is managed through a system in which the students pay for a certain amount of pages which can be added as they need. Engineering students have separate computer labs which they have printing pages already paid for through their tuition due to the larger amounts of printing they generally do.
