Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

As can be seen by the statistics, WVU’s campus is mostly Caucasian. The gap between the percentages of Caucasians to other ethnic groups is very high. It is clearly noticeable, and students have spoken up about the lack of diversity on campus. There are a few minority clubs around campus, but not very many due to the small number of minority races present on campus. They aren’t very visible among campus activities, but that is most likely because the groups are not very large. The tolerance at WVU seems to be at an acceptable level. Complaints about discrimination against race, sexual orientation, and religion have been almost nonexistent. Everyone here seems to accept other people for their differences.

The economic status of the students at WVU varies from person to person. This is definitely not a campus where each student must have the fanciest or most expensive items to fit in with everyone else. Diversity really is not a huge topic among people here at WVU, although the University does have a Diversity Week, which supports several programs and events to promote diversity among different groups. It seems the University is trying to make people aware of different cultures, even if they aren’t necessarily present on campus.

Little Different Races

At WVU there are a lot of Indian and white students. I feel everyone here is accepted, although each race seems to have there own hangout spots and places to eat, everyone gets along just fine. I know many people that are homosexual and from teachers I have never seen any type of diversity, they are accepted just like any other student. Sometimes politial or religios beliefs can be a problem but you have to take that into concideration when you sing up for certain classes, know that those conversations may or may not come up. All together I think WVU is very well with making everyone equal and have hardly any diversity amoung the campus.

Facts

Gay Pride

There is a lot of acceptance of all sexual orientations at WVU. There have been very few issues dealing with hate crimes against homosexual students. There are also several organizations to support gay pride and create a sense of unity among the gay student population.

Political Activity

There is not overwhelming political activity at WVU, but it's there and isn't dominated by one party. There is a Young Democrats club, as well as a Young Republicans club. There are also civil rights organizations like the ACLU and FMLA. Students are encouraged to get out and vote during elections, whether they affiliate with a particular group or not.

Economic Status

West Virginia has been a coal mining state for a very long time. While this is not the wealthiest of areas, they are definitely not the poorest. It is an average economic area, with Morgantown prospering especially because of all the students. There are some poorer areas as the state gets more rural, but for the most part, the state is very industrial and economically sufficient.

Most Common Religions

There is not really a most prominent religion at WVU. In the surrounding area, there are churches for Catholics, Methodists, Presbyterians, and Lutherans, along with Jewish temples. There is a wide variety for students to choose from, so they can go where they feel most comfortable.
