Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

All students are permitted to bring cars to WVU, but freshmen are encouraged to leave cars at home unless they are of absolute necessity. All students who do bring automobiles are required to purchase a parking pass. Permits can cost anywhere from $100–$300 for University-sponsored lots. Students living off campus can buy street permits for $5 for the year, but they do not guarantee a spot. Parking is extremely limited both on campus and in town: Parking anywhere on Downtown Campus is virtually impossible unless students arrive extremely early in the morning to find a spot in the Mountainlair Parking Garage, and there are few meter spots on campus. Parking in town is a little easier than on campus, but it’s still few and far between. Mostly all the parking consists of meter spots on the street, or meter lots on side streets.

It is worth bringing a car to campus if students live far away from WVU. That makes it easier on parents who have to pick up their students for vacations. Also, it makes it easier to get to places like the Rec Center, or the mall because students don’t have to wait for public transportation. It is always good to have a car to rely on in case emergencies or if public transportation is not running with a student’s schedule. It is advised to carpool and only bring a car if it is a necessity. Parking will be a hassle, so students should be prepared to deal with a little stress.

Needs Improving

Parking on campus can be a bit stressful. You need to request a permit parking spot about six months in advanced and they cost a pretty penny. The parking spots that you pay for on an hourly basis fill quickly. If you dont get there before 9am your chances of getting a spot are slim to none. Parking off campus is limited as well and is often costly.

Not Worth It

If you commute then you should bring a car the cost isn't too bad but it is a pain to find parking when you go to a school that has over 29,000 people. If you live in a dorm or in one of the off-campus apartments that have shuttles that bring you to the campus then don't bother with a car. You'll save money and time looking for a parking space.

Getting a Parking Permit

Parking permits are needed to park in any University-sponsored lot. They are eligible for use during the entire academic year and can be purchased at the WVU Parking Services office. One permit does not work for all lots, however, so you are only legally allowed to park in the lot you choose to purchase a permit for. Parking in any other lot leaves you responsible and open to tickets or towing.

Did You Know?

Best Places to Find a Parking Spot
Spots on the side of the street like on High Street are usually available. These are all meter spots. There are also several meter lots near High Street that are often available.

Good Luck Getting a Parking Spot Here
One of the hardest places to find a spot is in the Mountainlair during the day. It is filled with cars of commuters and professors, and it’s almost impossible to get into unless you are there very early.
