Western Michigan is among the safest universities in the state. The University has its very own police department that maintains a very strong presence on campus, especially during the night hours. The Kalamazoo police department, as well as the local sheriff, patrols the campus on a regular basis alongside the Western police department.
Campus is well lit, and there are a number of easily accessible blue-light boxes where, if someone were to run into trouble, a simple push of the button sends police officers to that location in 30 to 60 seconds to assist you. Crime on campus is virtually nonexistent, though. In the past few years, one minor incident has occurred on campus, making Western one of the safest places, even when you're walking alone. Campus police will go out of their way to ensure your safety.
