College Prowler Take
Wheaton is a Division-III school, and so sports are not the colossal event that they are at D-I schools. They do, however, raise substantial student support. Soccer draws the most fans, and it is not uncommon to see male bodies painted orange and blue at the games, as well as crazy costumes throughout the cheering section. The basketball and football teams also have several flocks of loyal supporters. A step down, you will find the club-sporting level. Students in these sports compete inter-collegially, and though they do not receive large student support, those who participate take them very seriously. The crew team has its cult following, as does ultimate Frisbee, and these two teams are nationally-recognized. Whether varsity or club levels, however, D-III sports end up being what the athletes make of them. And at Wheaton, student-athletes train with diligence and compete with passion. All sports at Wheaton are often overtaken by the vast popularity of IM sports. Approximately 45 percent of the students participate in at least one IM sport. All are beloved, but dodgeball, bowling, and water polo are some of the more obscure favorites. Everyone on a winning team of an IM sport, whether flag football or badminton, receives the coveted IM championship T-shirt, which has become incredibly popular among the students. The IM T-shirt compels students to draw blood during an innertube water polo match, or start a fight during a three-on-three basketball game. Here, it’s all about the T-shirt.

Varsity sports are not as big at Wheaton as they are at other schools. Men’s basketball and soccer get big student-attendance, and football gets a large crowd of both students and alumni. IMs are huge, however. IMs alway have a huge turnout, and winning the coveted ‘IM T-shirt’ is a prize many people seek after. |

Varsity sports are pretty good, but surprisingly, the better-performing sports are not the standard football or basketball, though those are both largely-attended. Soccer is surprisingly a very popular sport, and the girls just won the Division-III championship in 2005. The varsity sports, however, are very intense and require quite a bit of commitment, but not as much as a D-I school where the sport owns your soul. You still have a life outside your sport, if you want. IMs are quite large with a large amount of the student body participating. From softball, innertube water polo, soccer, basketball, and flag football, there’s an IM team for most anyone. |

Athletes at Wheaton approach their sport in the same manner Wheaton students approach all other areas of their lives: seriously and with a purpose. They practice hard on the field and study hard off the field. Because of this high level of commitment, a tight community develops among the teammates. |

I love the football games because the swim team dresses up in ridiculous costumes. They’re better cheerleaders than the actual cheerleaders! The basketball games are also a riot because the football team leads the cheering in the stands. Also, basketball and soccer games tend to be quite the social events. |

School Spirit
A majority of Wheaton students take great pride in the College. Even though it has become quite cliché to call Wheaton the “Harvard of Evangelical Colleges,” the students take pride in knowing that their school is Christian and does rank nationally in various academic categories, as well as athletically in the NCAA Division III. Most students have Wheaton College apparel and wear their T-shirts, hoodies, shorts, and sweats regularly. Not all students are crazy about Wheaton athletics, but most support them, and there are many students who rally around the athletic teams during home games. Here, it is not uncommon to see students dressed up in ridiculous costumes with their bodies painted orange and blue. Students also take pride in their extracurricular activities—Student Government, The Record, Men’s Glee Club, College Union, and many other organizations proudly wear their club’s T-shirts. The school is at a high during the annual Homecoming weekend, where the festivities kick off with students going wild, trying to provoke President Litfin into putting on his Homecoming T-shirt over his shirt and tie (which he always does). During the weekend, the football team has a huge game attended by many alumni, and the Homecoming Committee prepares a whole host of events, such as the Student/Alumni 5K Run and the ever-popular Powder Puff football tournament.
