College Prowler Take
All Wheaton freshmen are required to live in the dorms, and nearly 90 percent of the student body lives on campus. Although most college students would do anything to get off campus, housing at Wheaton is highly promoted and has profound effects on the social scene. Indeed, seniors still hang out with the people that were on their floors freshman year, and some coeds on brother-sister floors end up getting married. For freshmen and sophomores, the concept of brother-sister floors is essential. At Wheaton, each dorm floor has a corresponding opposite-sex floor with which it shares activities. It may sound lame, but it is actually quite enjoyed by the students. Fischer is the only dorm containing individual bathrooms, shared by members of each suite. Fischer is also more of a social dorm, as the lobby is full of people until the wee hours of the morning. Smith-Traber, on the other hand, is arguably better for building floor camaraderie. Oddly enough, the floor-shared bathrooms tend to foster more friendships within the floors. Traber Hall especially builds great friendships, as the floors are uniquely square shaped. Upperclassmen have a good variety of housing options, including better dorms, three apartment complexes, and 16 houses. Each has its own appeal for various upperclassmen with different wants and needs. Regardless of your housing choice, however, on-campus living at Wheaton is one of the administration’s chief concerns. If you choose to remain on campus for all four years, like most students, you won’t be disappointed.

“Traber is an underclass dorm...
“Traber is an underclass dorm (freshman and sophomore only) with a central bathroom that everyone shares. That’s where I lived and had a great time because the central bathroom really brings everyone together. Plus, the rooms are bigger than the male floors in Fischer (and you get a much better view of the sunsets if you live on the top floor like I did). It’s also in a rectangle shape, so you get to know everyone on the floor a lot better because you pass by everyone’s room. Fischer, on the other hand, is based on suites where two rooms share a bathroom, and it is built more in a straight line. This creates the possibility of not knowing the people at the other end of the hall. Traber guys seem to be more cohesive as a floor, and Fischer seems to be more built around really close groups of friends. For upperclassmen, there is Evans for guys, and that’s central campus, but the rooms are really small, and it has very little, if no, dorm life whatsoever. Most upperclassmen go for Terrace (mostly juniors), College Avenue Apartments (juniors and seniors), or Michigan-Crescent (seniors). All are nice and have their advantages and disadvantages.” |

“The dorms are better than average, but still dorms. The best part of the dorms is the staff. Having served as an RA for a year, I can assure students that the staff bends over backwards to care about the students.” |

Did You Know?Dorm life is a huge deal at Wheaton. The RAs (Resident Assistants) on each floor go through a competitive application process for their positions, not to mention serious training once accepted, including several training sessions, scenario workouts, and a weeklong venture in the summer. Fischer and Smith-Traber Halls have a bit of a history with dorm rivalry. Even within the past couple years, a couch was set on fire outside of Fischer by some Traber boys, and a skunk was “cooked” in a Traber microwave by some Fischer boys, creating a horrible stench in the men’s dorm.
There is strict open-floor policy between coeds of the dorms. Only on specific evenings can opposite-sex students come onto the other gender floor. Let’s just say it’s not the most popular rule.
