College Prowler Take

Ah, the city of Chicago, where the only thing about the weather that stays the same is the incessant wind. It is this same wind that brings a cooling breeze amidst the heat of the summer, yet turns the cold of winter frigidly unbearable. Indeed, Wheaton experiences all four seasons, and students should expect temperatures from negative-20 degrees to 90 degrees, in addition to every form of precipitation. Sadly, most students are not in school for the warmer seasons, and you will find Wheaton to be quite cold most of the time. Students from warmer places, such as Hawaii, Florida, and California, should especially be prepared for the winter, as the temperatures have shocked many. Everyone, regardless of location, should be sure to bring tons of warm clothes, but disregard any thought of needing top-of-the-line winter gear. If you are strapped for cash and need more winter-wear, the school has a free thrift store, the Corinthian Co-op, where you can take, or donate, as many warm clothes and blankets as you need.

Despite the long, overcast winter, Wheaton has a flat-out beautiful fall. The campus is covered with trees, and when the leaves reach that red, orange, and yellow glow, some students say that they wouldn’t trade it for all the summers in Florida. Additionally, during the last month of the spring semester, Wheaton is usually warm and breezy without a cloud in the sky. Around this time, students bust out their tank tops and shorts and show a little skin. Basically, the first two months of school in the fall and the last month in the spring are fantastic. The rest of the year, however, the weather is dreadful, and studying really isn’t a bad option.

The weather is not nearly at the top of the list of reasons to come to Wheaton. We have the end of summer (August/September), about two to three weeks of fall in late September, and then it's winter until April. It's not uncommon to experience winter temperatures and snow for six months out of the year here. You know it's bad when 30's and 40's in the spring become shorts and T-shirt weather!

I love the four seasons, so the weather at Wheaton is ideal. Very colorful fall (there are lots of trees on campus and a huge arboretum is not too far away), followed by a beautiful winter, followed by a wonderful spring with vibrant tulips, bright green grass, and love in the air. Most agree that the winters get a bit long and cold, but I’m used to the Wisconsin cold, so for me, the weather is beautiful! As far as what clothing to bring, despite what others may say, you do not need to be outfitted in North Face to be cool. Hit up the Corinthian Co-op, the free thrift store on campus, and you’ll be set.
