Like most food made in large quantities, Whitman’s food service has its moments of unusual, unidentifiable culinary intrigue, though for the most part, the food is delicious. Whitman offers three dining halls—Prentiss, Jewett, and Lyman—all of which are open at least five days a week. In addition to these, Whitman also offers meals from Café 66, located in Reid Campus Center. This café includes a grill, pizza oven, and a weekly option, called Fire and Spice, which is prepared in a wok and can range from stir-fry to fajitas. Since many Whitman students are health conscious, the dining halls make it convenient to eat healthily. Furthermore, there’s a large conglomerate of vegetarian and vegan Whitties, so the dining halls always make an effort to provide for these students. In fact, if students have any special dietary requirements, Whitman is very good about ensuring that these are met. They also make an effort to meet students’ demands for local, organic, and fair-trade ingredients. Although meal plans tend to be expensive and are required for all freshmen and most sophomores, students pay for what they get—good food at a high price. Many students purchase plans with too many meals, but the most savvy purchase is a combination plan of meals and “Flex Dollars,” which allow students to charge items from the various coffee carts around campus, Café 66, and the dining halls. Students occasionally give the on-campus food a rough review, but only because they haven’t considered the reality that university students face. All in all, Whitman students are some of the best-fed.

The food is very good for dining halls, but it can also get boring after a few months. There are always plenty of vegetarian and vegan options, which is great. Reid Campus Center offers delicious hamburgers, hot sandwiches, pizzas, and a different ethnic spotlight each week (e.g. Sicily, Asia, etc.); this is great if you get sick of the dining halls.

The food is pretty good. Anything gets old if you’ve had it too often. |

Overall, the food is very good, and the biggest downfall of food service is that it is very expensive, and students are required to stay on it for their first couple of years. Students tend to sigh with relief when they move off campus and each semester spend only one-fourth of the price of what they had to spend on campus food. |

Reid features an espresso bar, an open-hearth pizza oven, a fire and grill area, which weekly alternates between pasta and Asian stir-fry, and a grill area for burgers and fries. Also, many students love that they can buy a pint of Haagen Daas here! |

Did You Know?Bon Appetit chefs will specially prepare certain foods for students with dietary restrictions. Bon Appetit delivers dinners four nights a week to the Interest House Community, so residents don’t have to go to the dining hall and can order the food they want each week (by submitting a food form).
Bon Appetit lets students fill out “pack out” forms at least a week in advance of the event, and Bon Appetit will prepare all the raw ingredients for students to pick up when needed.
