College Prowler Take

Technically, Whitman has a no-tolerance policy when it comes to drugs, but a very relaxed alcohol policy. In fact, first-year students are allowed to drink in their rooms as long as the door is shut, and the group of people inside the room is small. Students, however, are not allowed to walk down the hall with an unsealed, open container of alcohol, but do not get in trouble necessarily for possessing alcohol.

Whitman’s policies make the school a place that allows students enough room to experiment and have their fun with alcohol, particularly. Whitman, in reality, is a pretty big drinking school, but it is very possible and common to find other social activities where alcohol is not involved. However, because of other factors (for example, how rigorous academics are), the relaxed policy lends itself to students governing their own lives and schedules. Those who spend too much time partying definitely end up paying for it academically, or in some other way. Though, generally, Whitman is a school that knows when to study hard and knows when to play hard. There are many options for students to have fun. Students looking for a non-exclusive party environment can find it very easily, and students who want to avoid the party scene can do so pretty easily, as well.

Students don’t get too much flack from the administration. They do their part when they’re not partying, or violating policy, to make Whitman a good place.

There are several systems in place to make sure things run smoothly. As an RA, we went through extensive and rigorous training to learn about policy and how to help those who are violating it. These systems basically just ensure that students don’t get hurt, especially when their judgment is impaired, and they might not realize they’re in potentially threatening situations.

Since there is such a strong focus on academics, the administration isn’t too strict about governing what students do to relieve some of the academic pressures.
