College Prowler Take

Considering that academics are a very high priority at Whitman, and also considering that in today’s world it’s virtually impossible to not use a computer in academic pursuits, Whitman guarantees that students have access to computers. Most students bring their own laptops, and the school ensures that wireless Internet or Ethernet is available in every dorm, every academic building, and even on Ankeny field. Whitman nonetheless provides several computer labs, most of which are accessible 24/7. In the library, computer availability varies depending on the time of day and time of year, and a student can be hard-pressed to find an available computer during finals.

Not only is the technology available for students and faculty, but it is also well-used. Most students check their e-mail several times a day, and a majority of the communication between the administration and the student body, between professors and their classes, between club presidents and their members, and between students in general occurs over e-mail. Listserves play an important role in the world of Whitman technology, even if listserve debates can get a little crazy at times. Students also applaud the existence of People Search, a program that allows them to find the names, photos, phone numbers, and dorm residences of fellow students, indulging their inner curiosity… or creeping tendencies.

One can always find an open computer, either in the computer labs or in the library, so a computer is not necessary. The best thing about the computer network is being able to download so much music.

I brought my own computer with me, but it really wasn’t necessary for school purposes. If you’re really into chatting, gaming, or e-mail, a computer of your own may be more crucial. The Ethernet is a T1, so it’s about middle-of-the-road, as far as speediness goes.

The campus is fully wired. Dorm rooms and interest houses all have Internet hook-ups, and the academic buildings have wireless networks.

I prefer having my own computer (hooking up to the network is really easy), but there are so many available computers on campus that it’s not necessary.

Especially during hectic times of the year, like midterms and finals, library computers are hard to come by. My recommendation is to work either in Maxey or the Science Building—there are always computers available there, and the environment is much quieter than the library.
