Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Considering that academics are a very high priority at Whitman, and also considering that in today’s world it’s virtually impossible to not use a computer in academic pursuits, Whitman guarantees that students have access to computers. Most students bring their own laptops, and the school ensures that wireless Internet or Ethernet is available in every dorm, every academic building, and even on Ankeny field. Whitman nonetheless provides several computer labs, most of which are accessible 24/7. In the library, computer availability varies depending on the time of day and time of year, and a student can be hard-pressed to find an available computer during finals.

Not only is the technology available for students and faculty, but it is also well-used. Most students check their e-mail several times a day, and a majority of the communication between the administration and the student body, between professors and their classes, between club presidents and their members, and between students in general occurs over e-mail. Listserves play an important role in the world of Whitman technology, even if listserve debates can get a little crazy at times. Students also applaud the existence of People Search, a program that allows them to find the names, photos, phone numbers, and dorm residences of fellow students, indulging their inner curiosity… or creeping tendencies.

Computers at Whitman College

The computer labs at Whitman College are nice. I can always find an open computer when I need one and have never had problems with any computers. We get free printing up to a certain amount of paper also. I do like having my own laptop though.

Don't need one, but easier if you do

Lots of people take notes with that archaic -- what's it called -- pen and paper method. Some use their laptops, but the vast majority students take in-class notes with their trusty ballpoint pen or mechanical pencil and a pad of paper. For homework, having your own computer helps. There are 4 computer labs on campus that are open 24/7 and they loan out laptops to students for several hours at a time. You can save documents to the network and access them from any point on the campus. My computer is about to die, and I'm probably going to end up waiting for cheaper prices on laptops before buying a new one and just using what Whitman has to offer.

Occasional Slow Network but Amazing Tech Support

The computers in the library and computer labs are often very efficient, but the wireless network, like any network really, can be very slow when a bunch of people sign on. Computer labs come in handy when you need to print something quickly before a class. The library is always the first option. I have not yet seen a need for a personal printer. I have a laptop, but I would not say one is necessary. In addition, my laptop got a virus not too long ago, and Tech Support were really on top of it. It was fixed the same day I went there (within an hour) with new (free) software to prevent any more issues.
