Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

As far as drugs are concerned at Whitman, the primary drug of choice is alcohol, and it is used in abundance. Although harder drugs do exist, they don’t exist in a large enough way that they are noticed and highly problematic. Most students couldn’t really respond to the drug scene because there isn’t much of one. Although alcohol is very popular, and probably the most abused substance on campus, drugs aside from marijuana are not seen regularly.

Yes, it is a rarity on the Whitman campus to attend a party where alcohol is not a major component to the atmosphere. However, many students would rather have alcohol in abundance than any other substance, particularly illegal drugs. Given that most substance abuse is centralized on alcohol, there is a certain pressure, of course, to drink—there is even an annual student-run tradition called “the Beer Mile.” Whitman does have a well-deserved reputation for being a drinking school, but most students feel this is better than being known for pot or other illegal substance abuse. And, though it is sometimes a challenge on a Thursday or Friday night (Whitman’s bigger party nights) to find a party without alcohol, it is even more challenging to find a party with illegal drugs. Overall, the drug scene and substance abuse are not extensive in variety or problematic for most students.

Not Really a Drug Culture

Besides the occasional marijuana use, you never really see drugs on campus, partly because there is stricter enforcement against illegal substance abuse than on underage drinking. Alcohol is more prevalent, but the school has a very respectful policy that allows students to make adult decisions so long as they are not endangering themselves or others. Students are given a lot of freedom, and the campus is a very safe and controlled environment for that.

Alcohol and Greek Life

I am a member of Kappa Alpha Theta, one of the sororities at our school. Though we are most definitely not a typical sorority, many do partake of alcohol. I have also witnessed some marijuana use, but outside of these two relatively tame drugs, there are not any other drug uses at Whitman College. However, the drinking that does go on is quite visible, and it is the norm to drink every night of the weekend. Residence halls even allow alcohol, as long as it is kept in the room. I would say that Whitman College is very lax on this policy, but probably because they know most of their students are too smart to do any of it.

Available, Not Prominent. Doesn't Interfere With Studies.

Like at nearly every college across the U.S., alcohol and weed are availble at Whitman. However, students can choose to drink as little or much as they would like and have a great time regardless of how much they consume/use. Fortunately, there is so much going on on campus that students don't drink due to boredom; they drink as a weekend social activity in safe ways.

Whitman is also very helpful with alcohol education. I've attended about 7 speeches and lectures on the subject over the course of the last semester. Also, there is a wellness center that offers students who have had too much a place to recover.
