College Prowler Take
Whitman’s facilities can only be described as nothing less than state-of-the-art. Among students, there are no complaints. The Fouts Center for Arts, the Sherwood Athletic Center, the Baker Ferguson Fitness Center, Penrose Library, the Science Building, and Reid Campus Center were all recently built or renovated. Olin Hall, the humanities building, also recently received some minor changes, and plans are in the works for renovations in Harper Joy theatre and Maxey Hall, the social sciences building. Although only certain sectors of the Whitman population may profit from a majority of the recent renovations—as Fouts is a dream come true for art majors, rock climbers adore Sherwood, and bio majors wish they could live in the Science Building—Penrose and Reid are the favorites among all students. Penrose Library is open 24 hours a day, allowing students a study spot at any hour, day or night, with a café that is open late. Students praise its large windows overlooking Ankeny field, the selection of movies available to rent, and the variety of study spaces, from private rooms to comfy couches, from group study desks to individual carrels. Reid Campus Center offers a non-traditional dining hall, study and lounge space, student mailboxes, the bookstore, and offices for many student services. Many students feel spoiled with the new and pristine facilities. The high quality definitely makes a difference in how pleasant it is to be on campus, contributing to the campus’s already beautiful natural setting.

Whitman is a beautiful and wonderfully accessible campus. All the buildings are fabulous and well kept. Let me tell you, watching the Penrose Library glow against a setting sun as you lay on Ankeney field is something that will burn itself into your mind--you will never forget Whitman College or the experiences you've had here.

The library is the best place to...
The library is the best place to see people and hang out most evenings, and it's awesome because it's open 24/7. The old gym (Sherwood) is being renovated, and the new gym is beautiful, although it's hard to find time to swim in the pool when teams or kayakers aren't practicing. The student center (Reid) is another popular hangout, and the food is good because it isn't a dining hall. But the hours that the food area is open are really limited and frustrating.

The library is amazing---It's open 24 hours a day with ample desk space overlooking Ankeny field, plenty of resources for any project, a cafe open until 2 a.m., and a silent reading room for intense study sessions. Whitman students lack nothing in terms of a great research and study facility. The Baker Ferguson Fitness Center, opened in 2006, is a state-of-the-art workout facility equipped with machines and personal televisions and a huge pool that offers kayaking lessons and open swim. Reid Campus Center, also very new to campus, has a great ballroom that hosts campus events and dance, a personal mailbox for each student, a large bookstore, a cafe, all of the student club offices, and many general meeting areas.

Reid is my favorite place to be—I really enjoy getting coffee and lunch with friends there. It’s much better than the old student building. This one’s much more open, has bigger windows, and just has more space all around. |

Ironically, the administration...
Ironically, the administration seems to be improving all of the non-academic buildings. Though Olin and Maxey (two main buildings for classes) are still in good condition, the school is spending more money now on building another health center and on another athletic center, too. I guess it all depends on when and where the money’s coming from to make these improvements, but it seems like the money could be better spent on fixing up the academic buildings. |
FactsWhat To Do on Campus
There are so many things to do on campus. Most students spend their time outdoors in between classes on Ankeny Field playing Frisbee, reading, or chatting, when the weather is nice. Otherwise, students go to Reid to check their e-mail and grab a bite to eat. Many also go to Sherwood Athletic Center, and some do last-minute reading or preparation for classes.
Favorite Things To Do
Whitties love the outdoors, and their constant presence on Ankeny Field proves it—you can find students there doing everything from playing frolf to practicing intramurals. On the weekends, student bands and other musical performances generally draw big crowds, as do all-campus parties. Hanging out in dorms (first- and second-year students) and off-campus houses (juniors and seniors) is another favorite thing students like to do. From watching TV, to sitting around chatting, to jamming on their instruments, Whitman students do it all together.
