Advice

  • Despite its smaller size, the Whitman Career Center has great connections with Whitman alumni and several other groups in need of students to help fill positions. The Career Center constantly e-mails students to keep them abreast of opportunities for work and even has a library of helpful books, so students can research agencies that specialize in what they’re interested in pursuing for summer work or after college. Set up appointments with people in the Career Center—they are always very helpful, and go out of their way to help students. If you’re looking for either an internship or a job, start early—they fill up fast, and starting early allows you more time to go over options and see what other help the Career Center can provide if something falls through. Definitely attend the internship meetings, and apply for both the Whitman Internship Fund and WA State Work Study Internship Fund if you qualify, and find a great internship that doesn’t pay well, or at all. These funds allow you to get a certain amount of money from the state or Whitman in order to do your internship. Also, the Job Fair is a helpful and strategic event to network, and make connections for future job prospects, so it’s a good idea to attend that, as well.
