Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

In terms of the adequacy of the local atmosphere, it definitely depends on what you’re looking for and what satisfies you in an environment. Seeing as how Whitman’s in Walla Walla, also known as the “boonies” or the “middle of nowhere,” it seems that most students consider the local atmosphere, for the most part, to be pretty quiet and limited and also focused on more outdoor activities. There are a few places to go that are entertaining—the movie theater, local restaurants and the wheat fields, for example. Walla Walla residents are pretty divided when it comes to how they feel about Whitman College; some say “thank goodness for Whitman for bringing a more liberal perspective,” while far more feel that the campus creates too much noise and trouble for the charm and quiet of Walla Walla. The town’s small size does seem to limit the local atmosphere and its ability to provide a diversity of culture. Though Walla Walla is also home to Walla Walla University (a Seventh Day Adventist school) and Walla Walla Community College, not much socializing goes on between these schools and Whitman.

Although Walla Walla is small, it does offer lovely attractions, especially in its natural beauty. If you’re someone who loves exploring the outdoors and appreciates nature, this school is very ideally located. From rock-climbing to star-gazing, it’s all possible in or around the town. Overall, the consensus seems to be this: be prepared for a small-town feel and less variety than a metropolitan area, but all in exchange for the closeness of nature.

Beautiful Walla Walla

Walla Walla is beautiful. Although it is not a big city, there is so much to do and see. I love getting off campus and going for a run in the wheatfields, skiing at Bluewood, going kayaking on the river, taking a drive, going camping, and watching the amazing Walla Walla sunsets. There are plenty of parks and places to run and go for a bike ride. It's easy to get around town and fun to go exploring to new places.

Wine, Wheat and Walla Walla

While Walla Walla may not be the busiest of towns, the people here are kind, welcoming and helpful. Regularly voted one of the nicest towns in America, Walla Walla has more to offer than meets the eye. Wheat fields and vineyards surround the town in a breathtaking country-side while not-so-distant mountains and rivers offer a plethora of wilderness activities from hiking to rafting to skiing.

Walla Walla: the Place So Nice They Named It Twice

But really. Despite a relatively small population, Walla Walla has a lot to offer. Aside from normal things like movie theaters and mini golf, Walla Walla also has community theater productions and town events, like the rodeo. Main Street is charming, and many of the restaurants are budget friendly. My favorite is Sweet Bazil, which offers artisan thin crust pizza 2 for $4 with a student discount. Walla Walla's rural location is a surprising bonus - the wheat fields make a gorgeous location for picnics, bike rides, or impromptu photo-shoots with friends, and the town is close to several outdoor attractions. The school offers a free ski bus to a nearby slope, and camping, hiking, and rock climbing locations are close by as well. Even the Snake and Salmon rivers in Idaho and Oregon are only a few hours away for those who love rafting.
