Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Since there isn’t much to do in Walla Walla, even if you are over 21, most nightlife happens right on Whitman’s campus. Nightlife could be defined as frat parties, house parties, dorm parties, concerts, or other Whitman-sponsored events. Almost every Friday night, there is a musical event called Coffeehouse in the basement of Reid that features students and occasionally a local band. There are also lectures or speakers, theatre and dance performances, screenings of movies, and the occasional sporting event. Parties are the main source of amusement and entertainment on campus.

Dorm parties are generally attended by first-years and are often hosted for the purpose of drinking before another event on campus. House parties are generally open to all of campus, although it may depend on where they are being hosted and whether they are intended for a specific campus group, The frats are often quite inviting, always open for girls, and very genial if you make an attempt to get to know their members in the light of day, too. They can be exclusive, however, if the party follows a Greek function. Other options for those over 21 include the Green or other Walla Walla bars. Students with cars will occasionally venture to the Tri-Cities to experience the few dance clubs there. There is always something happening in any of these options, and most students enjoy the accessibility and openness of the parties and events there.

Plenty of Good Options

After three years here, I can honestly say that there is always something going on during the weekends, either on campus or off. Student's here are good at making their own fun, and you'll basically never be at a shortage of things to do, be it a good party, or just hanging out in the awesome Walla Walla downtown. For students 21 and up, there are plenty of options off campus, several of which are student favorites.

There's a Lot to Do on Campus

Walla Walla is a great town, but it gets pretty dead at night. Luckily, there always is something going on at campus. Whitties enjoy their parties, whether it's at a frat, a house, or in the wheat fields. While there's no exterior club scene, people aren't heading out, leaving the campus feel dead. I feel like there's a better sense of community as a result.

Mainly at the Frats

People stay within the Whitman Bubble. There is always a function at at least one of the four fraternities, or you can go to the smattering of parties in Jewett, or in of the off-campus houses. Even if you don't drink, Friday and Saturday nights are a bonding experience, with impromptu movies being played in the main lounge or baking cookies for hallmates. No one drives to or from parties, as most of the residence halls is within walking distance.

Facts

Club Crawler

It’s some consolation that Walla Walla has some places to dance, but most of them are pretty shady; for the most part, students stay centralized on campus.

Bar Prowler

There aren’t too many places for students to go for drinks, but of the more well known is the following place.

Cheapest Place to Get a Drink

Barnaby’s

Organization Parties

Reflecting the social groups formed, each clique often has its own parties, such as athletic teams or the theater kids. In fact, the drama crowd has been known to throw some pretty outrageous theme parties, where their specialty drink, known as the “grog,” is readily available if you show up early.

What to Do if You're Not 21What's This?

Stay on campus—this is what most students do, even if they are over 21. Dances, concerts, lectures, frat parties, dorm parties, and house parties abound, making it easy for those under 21 to find something to do. It is a rarity that there aren’t at least a couple of options on any given weekend night.
