Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Considering the size of Walla Walla, the town offers a quaint variety of restaurants. From first-years to seniors, everyone takes advantage of the excellent off-campus cuisine. One of Walla Walla’s strengths is the diversity in the types of dining available. There are a lot of options available only on the West Coast, such as taco trucks serving authentic Mexican or restaurants serving Pacific Northwest specialties, and Whitties take special pride in this. As the town is a breeding ground for wineries, there are many fancy and expensive options, usually reserved for when the parents are in town—and footing the bill. For a student's price range, choices range from classic American eats to Thai food, from Italian to Mediterranean dining, and from Mexican food to Vietnamese to French cuisine. Students also enjoy that many of these options are within walking distance from campus.

Although recent economic troubles have led to the closing of several well-known Walla Walla restaurants, it seems that the variety of choices for students’ budgets will continue to subsist. Some students point out that it does cost a bit more per meal to be eating out rather than preparing their own food or going to the dining halls but cite that the options around town make it well worth it to break from the daily routine.

Mainstreet Has Great Options

Good cheap options are the Taqueria or Graze, other than that things get a little pricey.

Limited but Excellent

Walla Walla isn't a big city, obviously. However, with the wine industry and local food movements that have come up in the last five years or so, the city's restaurants have improved tremendously in quality of food and in number. There might not be a new place to try every weekend, but the places that are here are all excellent and almost entirely locally owned and operated. Not to mention that almost all the restaurants are reasonably priced, at by big city standards. Here are a few places to go: Graze sandwich shop, the Patisserie, Olive, Sweet Basil, Bacon and Eggs, Maple Counter Cafe, Brasserie Four, and Saffron.

Lots of New Cafes

Even four years ago, Walla Walla had few options for off-campus dining. However, recently, there have been many new cafes and restaurants opened just a few blocks from campus, including: Patisserie, a bakery and cafe with excellent espresso; Sweet Basil, an artisan pizza parlor; and Maple Counter; a cafe which serves breakfast and lunch (try their German Pancakes). Although there aren't many fast food options, there are plenty of quality eateries.
