Considering the size of Walla Walla, the town offers a quaint variety of restaurants. From first-years to seniors, everyone takes advantage of the excellent off-campus cuisine. One of Walla Walla’s strengths is the diversity in the types of dining available. There are a lot of options available only on the West Coast, such as taco trucks serving authentic Mexican or restaurants serving Pacific Northwest specialties, and Whitties take special pride in this. As the town is a breeding ground for wineries, there are many fancy and expensive options, usually reserved for when the parents are in town—and footing the bill. For a student's price range, choices range from classic American eats to Thai food, from Italian to Mediterranean dining, and from Mexican food to Vietnamese to French cuisine. Students also enjoy that many of these options are within walking distance from campus. Although recent economic troubles have led to the closing of several well-known Walla Walla restaurants, it seems that the variety of choices for students’ budgets will continue to subsist. Some students point out that it does cost a bit more per meal to be eating out rather than preparing their own food or going to the dining halls but cite that the options around town make it well worth it to break from the daily routine.

There are some very good, but expensive restaurants. Other than that, there aren't many good inexpensive places. I would recommend Pho Sho, which is a bit of a walk but cheap and quite good. There is also a good farmer's market, with local produce.

There are tons of great restaurants. You'll hear about them once you get into town. Go to the Taco Truck for great Mexican food--order the Walla Walla burrito. Go to Sweet Basil and get either the pizza by the slice or the calzones--awesome New York style pizza. Go to the patisseri for great desert. A lot of really nice upscale restaurants, too---have your parents look them up.

Walla Walla is definitely small, but the winery tourism definitely attracts some quaint cafes. I love Sweet Basil---on Tuesdays they have a student discount, and their trendy NY pizza vibe is a fun anomaly in the quiet farming area. Ice-Burgs has the BEST milkshakes, with real fruit and fresh ice cream. Check out Stone Soup Cafe. A spot for older locals, this sandwich and soup eatery offers many tasty classics. You'll also find many students studying at Colville St. Patisserie, a french bakery and coffee spot with delicious gelato and miniature cakes, tarts, and mousses.

Did You Know?Every Saturday morning when the weather is sunny (mainly during spring and early fall), Walla Walla has its farmer’s market, where local farmers and craftsman sell their products and display their work. Walla Walla is known for its sweet onions, and in the past, Whitman students have received a case of them for free before their first year. Food trucks, or “Taco Trucks” as students call them, are parked around Walla Walla. La Monarca is well-known for their inexpensive, great-tasting food.
