Comparable Schools' Transportation Grades:
Quick StatsBest Ways to Get Around Town
- Bum a ride from a friend, or nicely ask to borrow a car (Whitman students are nice enough that this happens pretty often).
- Ride a bike (students also let each other borrow bikes often).
- Walk. Everything you need is pretty much within walking distance.
How to Get to the Airport
- Since it is four miles from Whitman, the airport is an exception to the “always walk” philosophy, so students usually drive. However, many students use the Walla Walla Airport, so it’s usually easy to catch a ride if you don’t own a car. Some students also share cabs.
College Prowler Take
Since everything necessary is within walking distance, the public transportation system in Walla Walla is rarely used by students. Students who do need to get somewhere farther away either get rides from friends or borrow someone’s car. Though the system is available, many students either are unaware of it or do not use it much, if at all. In fact, most students find the public transportation system unnecessary to use. Everything on campus is within walking distance, and many students bike. Safeway (the local grocery store) is also right down the street from campus; many restaurants are just on Main Street right down from campus, as well; and the Greyhound bus station or Walla Walla airport are small, and close enough that students ask their friends with cars to drop them off or pick them up there. Overall, the public transportation system is extensive and adequate for such a small town, but on the upside, since the town is so small, and most of what students need is right on campus (or not far away), it is not needed. If anything, borrowing students’ cars, taking a taxi, and getting rides from other students is more of Whitman’s “public” transportation system, and students are always happy to help out.

On one hand, transportation isn't really around, but on the other hand, nobody ever needs it. It isn't like U of W where the campus is miles long. Everything you need is within a five-block radius. It is easy to transport yourself everywhere, and it costs nothing.

I don’t know how often the locals use it, but I do know there’s a bus system that goes to the busier parts of town. I’ve seen the main bus stop area before, but I have no idea where they drop off, and I’ve actually only seen public buses on a couple of rare occasions. |

Walla Walla is so small that a public transportation system really isn’t a necessity, though they do have one. For Whitman students, it’s certainly not used that often, or even that well-known. It doesn’t really have to be, since lots of people have cars and are willing to give you rides if you need to go somewhere that isn’t within a reasonable distance to walk. |
