College Prowler Take
While Wilkes has a traditional style coed dormitory, most of the residence halls scream of uniqueness and nostalgia. In the 19th century, the area lining the Susquehanna River in Wilkes-Barre was home to some of the most prominent people in Luzerne County’s history: coal barons, bankers, lawyers, ice harvesters, and businessmen. And, as time passed, many of these stately mansions were donated to Wilkes University. Some of these buildings are big gothic mansions, while others are New England, Romanesque, classical revival, Cajun, Tudor, and Greek-revival style. What makes this better than cookie-cutter residence halls is that each room is unique. Some features include built-in bookshelves, stained glass windows, high ceilings, window seats, original fireplaces, beautiful trim work, and more! Some of these mansions are designated male or female, and many of them, like Rifkin, have apartment-style living. Waller Hall even has some secret passageways.
For students looking for really socialized living, the traditional dorm, Evans, offers four floors and seven wings of coed quarters. Each floor has a kitchen and lounge. There is a bathroom between every two rooms, meaning students have their own private bathroom, shared only with their wall buddy. Again, the way the mansions are designed, whole floors will share the facilities. There are off-campus dorms too. Wilkes University entered an agreement with a local apartment complex, University Towers at Ten East South Street, one of the tallest buildings in Wilkes-Barre, to provide additional housing.

Living off campus for my stay at Wilkes, I’ve only had limited encounters with dorm life. However, all that I have seen is pretty good, as many of the dorms are based in former estates of Wilkes-Barre notables at the turn of the century. Pretty neat stuff, if you ask me. |

I only ever lived in Evans, and if you like a lot of people and activity, stay in Evans. If you don’t, avoid it. |

We have mansions as dorms, and they are awesome. We also have one traditional dorm, Evans, that is really nice. Evans is loud and you can meet a lot of people, and the mansions tend to be a little quiet. |

The mansions are nice. Evans reminds me of a hotel and a prison combined. If you’re the type that enjoys air conditioning, live in Evans; but seriously, you really only need that air conditioning two months out of the entire year. |

The dorms are unlike a lot of college dorms. There are on-campus apartments, which is what I live in, that are extremely nice, depending on which you get. The dorm to probably stay away from the most is Evans Hall because there are a lot of things that go on there that just aren’t pretty, and nobody does much about noise or annoyance. |
