Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

On-campus e-mail has a pretty good spam filter. All campus computers are equipped with the necessary programs to fulfill class assignments: Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Adobe PhotoShop and other design programs, SPSS statistics program and more. The University has an integrative media program which has a state-of-the art studio featuring top-of-the-line design and multimedia software.

Access to computers is pretty good. The labs are usually crowded, but there are several other options if a student can’t find an open computer in the first room they try. Several buildings have wireless, and the rest of campus is slowly heading in that direction. For the quick check of e-mail over coffee, there is access in UCOM. Also, appropriate writing and research classes are held in computer classrooms. In 2005–2006, Wilkes began to hand out flash drives to all students, which is very helpful. In 2008, they partnered with Microsoft and Barnes & Noble College Bookstore on Main Street to sell the most recent version of Microsoft Office Suite (for Windows and Mac) to students for a mere $10 with their ID. There are many complaints about the help desk calls being filtered through a Florida call center, but the IT staff at Wilkes is friendly and helpful, and they are usually prompt when they are notified of a ticket from their Sunshine State counterparts. Digital Wilkes, a strategic plan to enhance technology across campus, kicked off in 2006. With this, the online IT Web site offers alerts, updates, tutorials, and more.

Availability and Printing

The computers in the library are usually almost always taken but if you get there before the rush after dinner then it shouldn't be a problem. Bringing your laptop to the 2nd and 3rd floor of the library is the best idea. The computers in the SLC lounge don't always print so rushing to print out something before class can be frustrating. All the computers are big screen macs and run pretty well and support both windows and mac for whichever you prefer.

Computers

The computer labs are spread out fairly well throughout the campus, and our school is a Mac campus, which i am not familiar with, but they have windows on them which is nice. They are usually rather crowded though, and towards the end of the school year most of the printers tended to be jammed or down for maintenance. The wifi is decent unless you are in certain dorms, then you have to use the Ethernet, which does suck.

Dirty and Unreliable Newwork

When computer break, they aren't fixed right away. Computer tech services are horrendous. No one ever checks or refills paper and ink, plus you're charged for the printing services, so if you print and there is no paper or a bad print, you're in the hole. Also, is it that hard to have someone wipe down the keyboards or provide cleaner to do so?!
