Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Wilkes University is a campus that strives for diversity. With an office of multicultural affairs, a director of diversity, a multicultural student coalition, the Campus Interfaith Office, a gay-straight alliance, and many other offices and clubs dedicated to different groups, Wilkes recognizes its diverse student and faculty population. Somewhat contradictorily, the Wilkes campus population is not as diverse as the above information indicates.

Wilkes is not affiliated with any one religion. Better, it is open to all of them. The Campus Interfaith Office sponsors weekly discussions. Also, there are many openly gay students on campus. Homosexuality is something that is becoming widely accepted on campus, but is still something many have not yet come around to. When it comes to money, most would assume that people at Wilkes are rich due to the higher tuition. With 85 percent of students receiving financial aid, though, students of any socioeconomic class make up the student population. On the surface, it appears that most students are from middle-class families with working-class falling right behind. Wilkes offers much in the way of diversity, but as far as the numbers go, the school still does not have a very diverse campus.

You Can Tell Diversity Is Important

As an incoming freshman at Wilkes University, it's easy to see that diversity is a priority at this campus. Although most students are from the surrounding states and Pennsylvania, at orientation, there were students from places as far as South America, Georgia, and California. There is slightly more men than women, and students can choose to belong to a co-ed dorm if they please. The campus, also, has a variety of religious buildings, and government/leadership programs involving the community, economics, and politics.
