Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Since the beginning of time at Wilkes, University founders wanted all students to be able to be involved in everything. With that notion, a Greek life was never started at Wilkes as its selective nature would be restrictive. And, that notion still holds true today. No clubs or campus organizations are exclusive. Even with any campus club that wants to be recognized by student government (which means they are privy to University funding), the club’s constitution must state that the club is open to all students with a statement of non-exclusivity. This is not to say there aren’t tight groups and cliques on campus. It just means they don’t live together under one roof, and they didn’t have to do something silly, like streak down the Greenway, to foster a sense of belonging.

Some of the sport team members are roommates in off-campus housing, and that’s the closest to a frat you’ll get. Parties at these places are dubbed the soccer house, etc. Most Wilkes students would agree that the lack of Greek life is totally cool with them.

There are no sororities or fraternities, however I am on the programming board and know first hand how much the University emphasizes allowing students to be able to enjoy themselves without using alchohol or a spending great deal of money. Comedians, bands, TV stars, etc., all come to perform at numerous times during the semester.

Greek life is not at Wilkes University. This is one of that major reasons I like the school so much. There isn't any pressure to join a certain social group. I personally believe Greek life to be for those socially inept.

Health Care

There is very little Greek life,...

There is very little Greek life, since Wilkes does not endorse social fraternities. There are professional fraternities for various departments. I am personally involved in Sigma Alpha Pi, the National Society for Leadership and Success, and Lambda Kappa Sigma, a pharmacy school fraternity. Both are fun and welcoming, but neither have any hazing procedures.
