Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Kudos must be given to Wilkes University Public Safety. It is rare, if ever, that something violent happens on campus. There is a huge and recognizable Public Safety presence on campus, all donning bright yellow jackets (at least in cooler weather). There is always someone in the dispatch center as well. There are also emergency poles in a few spots on campus, and every dorm has a call-box to enter. Only those with keys or swipe cards can enter. There is a busy crosswalk on South Street connecting most of campus to the Student Center. Rushed drivers sometimes fail to see the students and the bright white lines and pedestrian crossing signs. Yes, a few Wilkes students have been hit by cars. But, since they put up flashing signs, an LCD speed display telling drivers how fast they are going, and brighter paint, crossing is much safer. As for the city, as many students noted, it may be sketchy within a few blocks of campus, but never on campus. From reading local papers, one would think that Wilkes-Barre is a violent city. Crime rates have been dwindling, but in fact, there is still a presence of violence and drugs. City police and police from neighboring boroughs and townships seem to be really on the up-and-up lately and seem to cooperate with campus police to ensure that off-campus residents in the seedy areas like South Wilkes-Barre are being taken care of. On that note, it must be said that off-campus parties in these problem areas often get busted. Off-campus parties in high-rises and other parts of town are less likely to be noticed.

Safer on Campus Than Off

Students are much safer on campus than off. However, there have been some violent attacks very close to campus and a mugging next to the school's library one night. Overall, I have never experienced anything on campus and I feel quite safe.

Security and safety on campus is...

Security and safety on campus is pretty good. The University officers sometimes let their positions go to their heads when dealing with students, which can be frustrating at times, but they generally perform quite well. The city has a growing crime problem, and with that lies a certain risk; however, I believe that people are generally pretty safe at Wilkes.
