College Prowler Take

Finding a place off campus is easy. Finding a good landlord may not be so easy. Use caution with security deposits, as many students have been known to be ripped off, as in not getting their deserved deposit back. Aside from that word of caution, off-campus housing seems to be a popular choice for upperclassmen. Except for the Provincial Towers and Marlboro Place, there aren’t many apartment complexes in the downtown area, so most rent duplexes or apartments within old houses in South Wilkes-Barre neighborhoods, which are very close to campus. Many of these offer spacious accommodations, although many are in old buildings and lacking modern amenities. These apartments, as noted, are mixed in with homeowners, which is a warning to keep quiet—Wilkes-Barre residents are known to call the cops on college students. It seems as if many of the best apartments to live in are passed down from graduating students to their underclassmen friends, so many alumni will notice their old houses are still accommodating Wilkes students. For this reason, although the papers are always full of places to rent, some of the best are heard about through word of mouth. There are more expensive apartment complexes near the mall in nearby Kingston such as East End Apartments, Wilkes Wood, Gateway Apartments, Mayflower Crossing, and Green Acres Apartments. These will set students back $700 to $1,200 per month, but they include pools, health clubs, plenty of parking, security, and other amenities.

My biggest mistake at Wilkes was choosing to stay on campus for two years. Wilkes is a tiny, but quality school if you learn to live here the right way. Living on campus is almost like living under a magnifying glass, but off campus you are free to study and socialize without worrying about being too loud or any number of the restricted things on campus.

Very convenient and very affordable. I paid roughly $10,000 for room and board freshman year, and since then I pay only about $5,000. It is very easy to get in touch with landlords to find places. Our off-campus council also has a new Web site that can help students find housing now, so it's even easier. So yes, it's definitely worth it.

There is plenty of off-campus housing, but ever since University Towers was purchased by the University, rent prices have gone up drastically. There are two primary renters, University Commons and Changing Skies. Changing Skies' various apartments are overpriced for the amount of space you get. University Commons has also raised their prices since they sold University Towers to Wilkes. For a two-bedroom apartment, it used to cost $620 for two people or $670 for three. Now it costs $760 for two or $930 for three in the same apartment when not much has been done to change the place.

Yeah, it’s worth it. I live as close as some of the dorms and can cook my own food, study in peace and quiet, and have enough room for my friends to come over.
