Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

There is literally nowhere for everyone to park in the vicinity of the school, even with the right permit. But some neighboring businesses are sympathetic to students and rent out their extra spaces. Being an urban school, one can sympathize with Wilkes that we are suffering growing pains. The campus tries to offer adequate parking and still maintain a campus with lots of green space. Still, there is just too much fiberglass on wheels for the available asphalt.

Residents are given passes to park at a lot across the river, which a shuttle can be taken to. Commuters must fill out an application, and passes are given on a point system which takes in to consideration miles from campus, internships and employment, carpooling, campus involvement, and so on. The good thing about this is that the parking passes are assigned by the student-run Commuter Council. For students who do not get a permit, there are about six city lots that are available. Street parking is limited as there is only parking on one side of the street and one of the major streets has no parking. Parking meters hold change for up to four hours only, and feeding the meters every day can really add up. It is highly recommended to get a Wilkes permit, or if not, pay a little more to get a permit from a city garage. If living on campus, it’s best not to have a car. Students will learn quickly to avoid meters at all costs.

Pricey and Not Necessary for a Small Campus That Has Alternative Transportation

I personally hope to obtain a parking permit at Wilkes. Each student has a choice of parking on campus (about $120/semester) or off campus by the football field ($40/semester). Unless you need to drive home frequently, I wouldn't recommend getting it at the price the school is requesting. The campus is so small that you don't need to drive, and if you do you can always car-pool with another student. They also have shuttles that take students to the mall, local events, football games, etc. I am getting a parking permit because I live far away, but close enough to drive home if I need to.

Decent Parking

There are enough meter spaces and three school parking lots.. As long as you get a permit, which is pretty simple you are good to go.

Getting a Parking Permit

Permits are distributed by Public Safety’s University Service Center, but students must apply for the following semester at the end of each semester. Commuter students do this through the commuter council, and resident students do this through Campus Housing. A number of factors, including your major requirements (internship or nursing rotation requirements, for example), positions held in clubs and organizations, and the distance a student must drive to and from campus may be taken into account for the following semester’s permit distribution.

Did You Know?

Best Places to Find a Parking Spot:
A city lot—meaning that your parking permit is useless if you get to campus late. The Blasi lot is usually open. Also, Ralston Field across the river accommodates a lot of commuters—but give yourself time as you have to take a shuttle to campus.

Good Luck Getting a Parking Spot Here:
Wilkes University. Okay, specifically, the real problem areas are South Franklin Street meters, the lot behind UCOM, and the SUB.
