Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Because Wilkes-Barre isn’t a huge city, public transportation isn’t the norm in terms of getting from point A to point B. However, if it is needed, it is there. A department store, drug store, convenience stores, and some eateries are within walking distance. Also, Wilkes offers University transportation about once a month to larger shopping areas. (You have to schedule a trip with the University.) For students needing a taxi to get somewhere, there are several cab companies that can be called for a car. Additionally, there is the Luzerne County Transit Authority, which has a daily bus schedule to all points in the county, as well as to neighboring Scranton. The LCTA offers a student discount as well.

If students have one too many, Wilkes also works with a
local cab service to provide a no-questions-asked cab ride from wherever they are. Wilkes’s Public Safety Office offers rides to students, as well. If one needs to get home, or go
on a vacation from the Wilkes-Barre area, there is a bus station on Public Square, which can connect students to any point in the country. The Wilkes-Barre/Scranton International Airport has several major carriers that offer direct and connection flights to various points. For handicapped students, there are also services available through the Luzerne County intermediate unit.

Transportation

Wilkes transportation I think is very good. There is always a shuttle or a bus that one can take to get around to places. Even late at night one can always call public safety to give them a ride somewhere like back to their apartment or dorm room.

Wilkes has a shuttle that will...

Wilkes has a shuttle that will take you from campus to the parking lot across the bridge, and there is a Martz bus station in the square right next to campus if you want to go on a bus trip anywhere. Public transportation, though, is not commonly used in Wilkes-Barre. Most students bring their cars up with them.

I've never used public...

I've never used public transportation in Wilkes Barre. I do like that Wilkes provides the free taxi service if you're somewhere and you've been drinking or you feel unsafe. But I think they need to make students more aware that it's available and how to use it.
