Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

If you accept that nothing will ever be as good as your mother’s homemade meals, then you will find yourself surprised with how good Willamette food can actually be. The University makes a great effort to offer healthy choices for students of all lifestyles. Vegetarians, vegans, meat eaters, and dieters are all considered when Bon Appétit, Willamette’s food provider, is planning the campus food options. Furthermore, there is a variety of affordable food, and there is plenty of it! Goudy is the main dining hall on campus. It offers anything and everything you could desire. For breakfast, they have all of the staples, plus a pastry bar. It is delicious and all made-to-order. The most popular lunch item would have to be the wrap, which you can customize. The all-you-can-eat dinner menu changes nightly, offering many different entrées and desserts. And if you cannot find anything appetizing, there is the salad bar and pizza station. The two smaller dining halls are Cat Cavern and Kaneko Café. The Cat Cavern is popular for its sandwich bar or quesadilla grill. Kaneko Café is mostly for those students who live in the Kaneko Commons and do not want to face the sky bridge every meal, but students living on Main Campus do visit often. The Kaneko Café offers some of the best Japanese food in Salem, as well as a wide variety of everyday breakfast and lunch staples.

The greatest criticism of on-campus food would be directed at the long lines during the busy times, as well as the inopportune hours. Most students get hungry at the same time and end up going to lunch right after their afternoon class. If you can get there five minutes before the rush, you will be fine. Most of the time you will find yourself stuck with 50 other students who want a wrap. None of the dining halls are open 24 hours a day, which can become inconvenient when you want a late snack. The solution is simple: Bring a mini-fridge, and keep it stocked with leftovers.

Food and Dining Options

There is food to fit any type of diet. There are vegan options and gluten free options but it's normally the same food options at lunch, and the same options for dinners. The food also has set hours when it is open and closed. It would be better if it was open at all times.

Lunch Is Great, but Dinner...

Lunch is great here; you have a lot of options at two dining halls, both of them providing healthy choices. However, lunch is usually pretty expensive, so I recommend a meal plan with a lot of points. Dinner is an all-you-care-to-eat meal six times a week, and the food can be sketchy. Sometimes the entrees are perfectly fine with a great dessert to match, but more likely you're getting fatty meat and boring sides. Can be repetitive. Brunch on the weekends helps to compensate though!

Meal Plans

At Willamette, all dinners on school days are "free" (already payed for all you can eat) so those are usually the only meals I eat in the commons. For other meals, I usually spend my meal points at Montag, our convenience store. It saves me money and time, especially since Montag is right next door to my dorm.
