Campus Strictness

Quick Stats

Students Are Most Likely to Get Caught...
  • Drinking underage
  • Parking in the wrong spot
  • Violating a fire code by leaving your dorm door open or putting a chair out on the Kaneko balconies

Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Willamette's penalties and enforcement of the rules do not reflect the real world. When underage students are caught drinking by police off campus, they get an MIP (Minor in Possession), which is a misdemeanor. On campus, Willamette students receive a $50 fine and a slap on the wrist. Students are rarely held accountable for their actions, and many even pride themselves on being able to bamboozle the Campus Safety officers, resident advisors, and administrators. The RAs are not feared at all, but be careful about how comfortable you become around them because, in the end, their loyalties lie with the University and its policies. While most of Willamette’s policies and regulations are completely justifiable, it is annoying when a student is reprimanded for burning incense, while underage drinking and substance abuse don't seem to be taken seriously as they should.

Most disciplinary cases go through the Judicial Board, also known as J-Board. This Residential Services group is made up of students who are selected to represent the East Side, West Side, and Kaneko regions of campus. When a student violates a campus policy, he or she is sent to J-Board to state his or her case. J-Board then decides the best plan of action. There are different levels of sanctions depending on the violation; obviously exiting a building through a window is a much smaller offense than committing a hate crimes or arson. The disciplinary action depends on how many offenses the student has already committed and the level of sanction. For alcohol violations, students are usually required to pay a fine and visit the campus alcohol counselor.

If You Respect You'll Be Respected

Attendance depends completely on your professor. I've had profs who take attendance every day and will drop you letter grades if your attendance is poor but I've also had profs who have said they don't care if or when you show up.

As far as the drinking/drug scene, they're not so bad, if you aren't bothering anyone or being disruptive it's not likely you'll be noticed. If you are caught, they tend to give you a second chance. They'd rather you inform them of a problem and get help for it then not tell them out of fear of punishment.

As far as the sex scene goes, there is no curfew and men and women are able to room together in the dorms if they so choose, we also offer gender neutral housing.

Pretty Chill

If you aren't being stupid and openly drinking in front of an RA then you will be fine, even if you are underage. The campus is a wet campus so those who are over 21 can drink freely in the dorms and even minors can drink without too much fear of being caught. If you are caught, not very much will happen. You just get a slap on the wrist from the student judicial board and get told not to do it again basically. Repeat offenders incur more severe punishments but it rarely happens. The worst you'll get is some community service. They are a bit more strict about drug use, including marijuana, but if you aren't stupid about it, you're unlikely to get caught. Drinking in your room before going out to parties is popular because if you get busted drinking off campus the punishments are considerably worse since you have to deal with Salem PD. Overall, campus is pretty chill about this kinda stuff and if you are being obvious or stupid, you won't get in trouble.

Open Minded

For the most part, the campus is pretty willing to let things go. Don't be too loud in the dorms, I don't blame them for enforcing that, but they almost always give a warning before getting anyone in trouble.
