Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Like most schools, the most popular drug on campus is marijuana. A good number of Willamette students will smoke marijuana, but for the majority that does not smoke, there is no peer pressure to join in. While Willamette students tend to be pretty liberal toward marijuana, it is not visible on campus. Most people who smoke do so in their room or at off-campus houses. Harder drugs—cocaine, meth, and heroine—are very rare on campus, and you have to go searching to find any. The overwhelming majority of Willamette students will graduate without ever seeing any hard drugs.

Willamette is great for students who enjoy recreational use of marijuana, but it's also great for students who do not want to be around drugs. There is a good balance between those two groups. One nice thing about Willamette is that the University provides free substance counseling services for students struggling with substance abuse.

Nice Lifestyle

While it would be a lie to say Willamette doesn't party, it's not as common as you'd think. On campus is usually pretty dead on weekends since most people go off campus to party. The Salem Police do tend to pick on parties when they're bored. However, it seems to be that those who want to party, will party. Those who don't will avoid it, and won't get bothered. You can easily avoid the scene without any peer pressure. But those involved don't complain. As for drugs, the only really open and obvious one is marijuana, which is fairly common. But other than that, if you don't want a part in it, you don't have to be there.

Fair Amount of Marijuana Users

There are several substance-free dorms and they generally stay that way. Some halls are known for their stoner populations. There are plenty of cases of people being caught with paraphernalia or drugs, and they are usually sentenced to community service. The presence of marijuana is not a pervasive problem, though. People drink, too, but it's not as prevalent on campus as marijuana.
