Local Specialties Wine from vineyards in the Willamette Valley : There is no official Salem martini or special local beer, but the vineyards in the Willamette Valley produce some of the best wine in the country. Willamette Valley Vineyards is only 10 minutes south of Salem and offers wine tastings.

Salem does not have the greatest nightlife. While Salem does have some nice bars, it sorely lacks decent nightclubs, and the downtown bars tend to close as early as midnight. Bars such as Magoo’s, Pete’s Place, and The Ram have great drink specials, including half-off pints. If you are looking for a cheap drink with your dinner, then Salem is a great city, but if you are looking for crazy nightlife, Salem is not the best place.

For students who enjoy a crazy nightlife, there are house parties hosted by Willamette students off campus. These parties are a great venue for the "wilder" students. For those students who like a sober lifestyle or don’t enjoy parties, there are always plenty of activities to do on campus, and there's little peer pressure to attend parties.

There is usually something to do considering there is a number of bars and always some sort of house party. Nothing too crazy and Portland is about a 45 min drive if you wanna hit up the bigger clubs.

Plenty to Do

Parties are everywhere if you are a partier. There aren't any clubs in Salem, but people find plenty of things to do on campus, take Nerf Gun Wars for an example. We have several buildings that are open 24/7. We also have a convince store opened late at night that is well stocked with movies and flat screen tvs everywhere if you're looking for a quiet movie night.

Unless you insert yourself into certain social circles the nightlife is pretty mellow and mostly mainted by the upperclassmen

Did You Know? If you are not 21, you cannot go out around Salem. And be warned that students who are caught with a fake ID will get thrown out of the bar, and no one wants to be the "Kid Who Got Thrown Out of the Bar." Most underage students hang out in their dorms rooms or at off-campus houses.

The Spur is an example of Oregon country bumpkins at their finest. This converted barn is a bar and club in one. The highlight? Get there at 7 p.m. to learn a series of line dances, and then join in the line-dancing fun until midnight, when the music changes from country to hip-hop.
