Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

One of the advantages of Willamette’s location is that it's within walking distance of downtown Salem, and it's fairly close to Lancaster Drive, which is one of the busiest streets in Salem. If you are looking for fast food or chain restaurants, you will find plenty on Lancaster Drive. If you are seeking something more original, you will want to explore downtown Salem and its hidden treasures. Some of the best restaurants are the Willamette Noodle Company, Jonathan’s, and Fuji’s Rice Time. All of these eateries are high quality and very affordable. If your parents are in town and you want that fancy dining experience that a college budget won’t afford you, then steer your family toward Bentley’s Grill or DaVinci’s Ristorante. Be aware that the wait list for these restaurants is very long during commencement and Family Weekend.

In addition to the chain restaurants on Lancaster Drive and the hidden treasures in downtown Salem, there are several Willamette classics within walking distance of campus. If you want a good burger and beer, then make sure to go to The Ram, which is across the street from campus. Thursday nights are $2 pints of beer for students over 21, and normally, the bar is completely filled to capacity with Willamette students. For students under the age of 21, The Ram is famous for its half-off menu on Sundays starting at 9 p.m. If you want great hash browns and French toast on the weekends, make sure you stop by Word of Mouth bistro or the Sassy Onion. One of the worst eateries in town that stays in business thanks to Willamette students is Muchas Gracias, or simply "Muchas," as students refer to it. Go to the downtown Muchas at 2 a.m. on a weekend, and you will see at least five Willamette students indulging in greasy burritos and nachos. If you like good Mexican food, don’t fret, as Salem is home to some great taco trucks and Mexican eateries.

Off Campus Dining Is So-So

Good places to eat off campus are hard to find, and once you find a decent place to eat, it can be pretty expensive.

Your Average Medium-Sized Town

There are plenty of Mexican, Vietnamese, Thai, Chinese, Indian, Japanese, Italian and French restaurants available. Downtown has noodle shops and your average downtown dining available. There's a lack of options for cheap dining.

Off-Campus Dining

There are a lot of places off campus. Some are farther than others so it's nice to have a car when the places are too far away or if the weather is too bad to walk in. Most of them are cheap and some offer student discounts. There's a lot of different types of food, some that I've never even tried before but will be going back because they were that good.
