Popular Areas Anywhere within close walking or biking distance to the school is a popular area. Living on or around Bush Park is ideal for most students. Another nice area is the historic district around the Capitol building. The neighborhoods around Kaneko and Bush Elementary are not as desirable, but there are still a few nice houses that Willamette students have occupied for years.

Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

There are certainly pros and cons to living off campus. The pros include having your own personal space, not having to live in the small hall with people you don’t like, and no burdensome fire code regulations. A major pro for many students is that you get a sense of privacy and ownership that you do not get on campus. In terms of saving money, it’s on a case-by-case basis. Students who are smart with utilities and groceries will end up saving money by living off campus; students who are not smart with utilities and groceries will end up not saving money by living off campus.

There are several important things to keep in mind when deciding to live off campus. First, you will no longer have someone to clean the bathroom for you, and you have to pay for utilities. The second, and perhaps most important, is that if you get in trouble, the trouble will be with the police department. If you decide to host large parties, be careful not to have the police called to your house. You will also have to adjust your waking-up habits, as it will no longer be possible to wake up 10 minutes before class and still arrive on time. If you decide to live off campus, there are plenty of affordable and spacious houses and apartments reasonably close to campus.

Very Residential

There are lots of homes and apartments available withing reasonable distance from campus. Homes can be rented either by room in Salem resident's homes or entire houses can be rented. The neighborhoods around campus are pretty full with either profs, students, or other campus workers. The neighborhoods around the school are generally safe and costs for a room in a home usually range between $300-$600 a month depending on size, location, and amenities included.

Decent-Awesome

I've heard the rent for most places is super cheap and so are utilities. The housing is close to campus and the houses and landlords are nice.

The off-campus houses themselves are very spacious and in good condition. The only down side to them is the distance from campus. If you don't have a car walking in Oregon weather is horrible to deal with because of the rain, wind, and cold. Although safe rides is also available if you have the money.
